Mission/Objective • Our objective is to educate future teachers the importance of healthy snacking, and ways to incorporate new ideas in the classroom.
Guidelines • a healthy snack choice should contain: • 7 grams or less of fat • 2 grams or less of saturated fat • 0 grams of trans fat • 15 grams or less of sugar • 250 milligrams or less of sodium • No artificial sweeteners
Benefits • Manage Hunger • Maintain energy levels • Increase and build up of Immune System • Children's Physical Development • Stay focused
Snacks that help with learning • Encourage Concentration • Provide Energy • Boost Brain Function • Examples • wheat crackers with peanut butter, string cheese, apple or orange slices or carrot and celery sticks because they are nutritious and promote concentration. • Yogurt with berries or almonds with a fresh apple.
Examples of Foods that boost learning • Examples • Fish • Soy • Colorful and Citrus fruits • Berries • Leafy Green Vegetables • Whole Grains • Nuts- walnuts, cashews, almonds etc. • Eggs
Incorporating Nutrition and Wellness intoAcademic Standards • The Wisconsin Model Academic Standards lists objectives for major subject areas and grade levels that students must meet in school. National Health standards must be incorporated to students. • All subjects can incorporate nutrition and wellness into academics.
