Setting the scene • One of ten boroughs within Greater Manchester • Population approximately 210,000 • Historically a market centre with emphasis in wool manufacture • Manufacturing industries grew including metal and chemical processes • Has a rich heritage including SSSI, SBI, SPB, listed buildings and conservation zones

4. HIGH PRIORITY SITES • 35 sites identified: • 21 Dye works • 3 Chemical works • 3 Asbestos works • 2 Gas works • 2 Oil processing facilities • 1 Colliery • 1 Industrial landfill • 2 Petrol filling stations • 160 LANDFILLS, 40 may represent a gas risk
