Innovative Media Interaction: Generalized List Control by Steven Drucker

Steven Drucker, Lead Researcher at Microsoft Research’s Next Media Research Group, explores novel experiences for media interaction through the Generalized List Control. This presentation delves into parameters such as 1D parameterized manifolds in 3D, addressing item orientation with three degrees of freedom. Unique solutions to mapping challenges in 3D spaces are discussed, alongside the potential for broadband voice and video chat to enhance gaming experiences. Discover how these advancements can transform spectator capabilities in popular games into an engaging multimedia community.

  2. The Next Media Research Group • Creating novel experiences for interacting with media. Steven M. Drucker Lead Researcher Next Media Research Group

  3. Generalized List Control • DEMO

  4. Generalized List Widget Joint work with Kentaro Toyama • Parameters: • 1D parameterized manifold in 3D • “notch” point • closed vs. open path • inter-item spacing • may be per item

  5. Generalized List Control Item Orientation • 3 degrees of freedom for orientation. • Can be specified manually or automatically in relationship to points, axes, planes, and/or path. • Some options for item orientation: Fixed Tangent to Path Facing Viewer

  6. Generalized List Control Hit Behavior • Smooth many-to-one mapping of plane to 1D path in 3D is impossible without singularities. • Possible solutions: • Straightforward mapping; ignore singularities • Use of dynamic “springs” • Approximate mappings

  7. Voice / video chat is available through broadband connections. People would enjoy being able to go to any network based game to observe the action, meet friends in that space and chat. Highlights of popular games would be featured on a broadband/television show featuring exciting action from popular games and generating "fame" possibilities for expert players. Spectator capabilities would be enabled for most games allowing seamless movement to observe across a wide variety of game types. Spectator (original concept video): Web community based on Spectator enabled games VIDEO
