  17. Ancient Mali • Mansa Musa was its richest and most powerful ruler (1280-1337) • Built universities and mosques throughout the empire • In 1324 made the Hajj to Mecca - brought so much gold with him that he caused an economic inflation in the Mediterranean

  19. Songhai • Empire from 1340-1591 AD • Gained more power after the decline of Mali • Located in West Africa along the Niger River • Again, became an important empire for trade in west Africa

  20. Timbuktu • Important city located in West Africa along the Niger River • Vast amounts of Trade- had merchants from Asia and Europe • Center of Education- Islamic Universities

  21. Religion in West African Kingdoms • West Africans were originally polytheistic and worshipped gods and goddesses identified with forces of nature • Animism: belief that natural objects possess a spirit • Islam was brought to these areas through trade
