  2. What this workshop covers • Intro to communicating for educators new to Second Life (SL) • Voice and PowerPoint • Guided tour of the ‘Garden of Conversations’ professional development space • You log in • Discussion of some possibilities for communicative activities in SL

  3. SL Communication tools • Chat – text • Chat – voice • Instant Messaging • One to one - private • One to many - restricted • Friending • Gestures and animations • Groups • Many to many – open to members • Presentation tools • SL environment and objects

  4. Basic skills development • Basic SL communication skills acquisition and practice • Co-requisite skills • Avatar control • Camera control • Use of notecards • Use of landmarks and teleporting • Other requirements • Time relative to the complexity of the tasks and skills required • Typing skills for text chat • Language skills adequate to the tasks • Language translator devices

  6. Communication activities • Direct ‘focus on SL’ approach • Learn to text chat • Learn to IM • Learn to voice chat • Make ‘friends’ • Read profiles • Join groups

  7. Communication activities (cont) • Focus on other content • Attend classes • Meet distance classmates for tutorials or group work • Attend group meetings eg SLED, ISTE • Report on an event • Engage in a role play (RP) • Collaborate on a project eg. organise an event

Communication activities (cont) • ‘Not possible in RL’ activities • Excursions to places you couldn’t normally go to, eg Sistine Chapel, the moon • Experiences you couldn’t normally experience eg schizophrenia simulation, MC Escher building • Simulations of other times and cultures eg Tudor sims, Victorian sims, Star Trek and Tolkien sims, Neco and Goth sims.

  9. Concluding suggestions • SL offers many opportunities for communication • Exploration and experience are key • Educators need time to get comfortable first • Start with simple activities • Have a plan!
