The word “Inferno” has a very distinct meaning in this language. In fact, it’s the setting for our entire text. Welcome to Dante’s Inferno.   3. Lo QueEs Un “Canto”? (I2K) • The canto is a principal form of division in a long poem. • The word comes from Italian, meaning "song" or singing. • Our story is divided into short divisions or “cantos”.

The Protagonist • Durante Degli Alighieri • Known as the Father of the Italian Language • Not the video game character some of you are familiar with. • Was exiled from his home city of Florence after making some powerful people upset • Therefore, most of the people “suffering” in the inferno are people that he knew and didn’t like or celebrities that he knew of and didn’t like. • Stay Ready Challenge: Why Did Martin Luther (not the King) protest against the Catholic Church?

  5. The Guide • PubliusVergiliusMaro (Best known as Virgil) • Considered one of Rome’s greatest poets and most virtuous citizens. • Died BEFORE Christ was born…this is I2K (Important 2 Know) • Never knew Dante in REAL life • Dante looked up to him which is WHY he’s his guide through The Inferno.

I2K – What’s an Allegory? • Allegory - a story, poem, or picture that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning, typically a moral or political one. • The Inferno is an allegorical poem… • Dante represents The Everyman trying to find the right path. • The Lion, Leopard, and She-Wolf represent sins on the hill preventing Dante from making it to the light.

Where The “Bad Things” Are • The Truth about Consequence (What is punishment or Hell like in various religions) • In Islam…there’s a FIERY hell • In Judaism…there’s an INTENSE FEELING of shame for turning away from G-d • In Buddhism…there is endless suffering…but as usual, a chance for REBIRTH • Ancient Taoism…has NO CONCEPT of Hell • In Wicca…there is NO SUCH THING as Hell as there is no concept of punishment or reward. • In Native African traditions…Hell is simply WANDERING souls on Earth unable to make it to G-d • In Native Asian traditions…Hell is an underground, uninviting WET place for sinful people

CANTOS I & II READING CHECK • You have 6 minutes to complete your reading check. • You may use your text, but here’s why it may NOT be smart to… • 6 minutes is NOT a lot of time • The questions all involve key moments in the test and you should have identified these points while reading and marked them with a post-it.

Tuesday – Comfort Reading • We are “Comfort Reading” Cantos III & IV • This is a TRIAL and will only continue IF you act responsibly today. • Find a comfortable position in the class and read the assigned Cantos • Your eyes MUST be visible • You can choose to read in your own chosen groups at a Level 1 • I will be very strict! • Only reading, connecting, or explaining should be happening in groups. • Any off task behaviors will result in demerits and isolation. • Group read at your own risk. Choose wisely. • If you know reading independently is better for you, do so.

  27. Character Chart Completion • Who’s present? • What do you know about them? • If you could ask one question TO the character or TO the teacher ABOUT this character, what would it be? • Is the character being punished? • If so, how?

  28. Seek and You Shall Find • Switch Partners and compare your character chart with another person. • Make edits/additions as you deem necessary. • We will revisit as a group so make sure that what you sure is as accurate as possible. • We don’t want any “lost souls”.

  33. Different Levels to This! Level of Hell Punishment Bitten by flies and wasps; Worms consume their blood and tears. Meaningless Existence (Nothing) Continuous wind, rain, and stormy weather; Also, lying still in darkness Stink; Rain filled with filth and poop (sewage) • Anti-Inferno • First Circle of Hell (Limbo) • Second Circle of Hell (Lust) • Third Circle of Hell (Gluttony)

THEME ALERT!! • G-d’s perfect and precise punishment is a key theme in Dante’s Inferno. • Examples: • The Lustful, those who were obsessed with the stimulation of the flesh in life, now have their nerves unceasingly stimulated by the storm.  • Also, they lie prone and in the dark—the conditions in which acts of lust generally take place. • The Gluttonous, those who excessively pursued pleasure in life now lie in an overabundance of that which disgusts. • The excrement that douses them is both the product of their greedy and wasteful consumption.

  36. Be Prepared for Dante Charades • If we have time… • You will act out a punishment or sin and the group will have to guess which level they are witnessing • Students may work with partners • The team that guesses correctly will receive extra points.

  37. Thursday – Silent Independent Read While reading, consider the punishments present and mentally prepare/plan for your potential charades.

  38. Dante Charades! • You will be called up one pair at a time, and assigned a sin or punishment. • You will have 2 min. to act out your charade. • The first group to answer which LEVEL we’re witnessing correctly gets the point AS WELL AS the group that acted so precisely.
