2. The Reading Process • consists of 3 steps • Before • During • After • complete activities before reading to set the stage, throughout reading to enhance comprehension, and after reading to check for understanding

3. Before Reading • the 3 P’s: • Prior Knowledge- what do you know about this topic? • Preview- skim the text, look at headings, charts/graphs, pictures, questions, etc. • Purpose- set a purpose for reading, what does the author want me to learn from this text?

4. During Reading • read actively • interact with the text • focus your attention on the text • break the text into smaller sections • monitor your comprehension by using active reading strategies

5. During Reading • 6 Active Reading Strategies • Mark/Highlight the text, take notes, use post-it notes • Ask Questions to interact with the text • Make Connections to self, world, other texts, movies • Predict what may happen next • Visualize the action in the form of a drawing or mental movie • Clarify by rereading the text, looking up words

6. After Reading • Pause and Reflect • Ask yourself questions like, “Do I understand what I’ve just read?” and “Can I retell the selection in my own words?” • Reread • If you answer no to the previous questions, then you need to go back and reread. Even the best readers need to reread sometimes!

7. After Reading • Summarize • Put the text into your own words • Interpret, Analyze, Evaluate • The ideas in the text • Synthesize • Use your newly learned information to formulate new ideas
