  2. What IS figurative language?? • Figurative language means using words to imply another meaning or to evoke an emotion.

  3. How do we use Figurative Language in everyday life? • We use it and we aren’t even aware of it sometimes! • Certain things we say in conversation could be forms of figurative language. • Music • Television

  4. So what is a simile?Smile as you say "simile" with me. Similes are similar to metaphors but they aren't the same things! • A simile is a comparison between two different things, designed to create an unusual, interesting, emotional or other effect often using words such as 'like' or 'as ... as'. • Common comparisons are with the qualities associated with animals (as sly as a fox, as brave as a lion, etc.).

  5. Practice! • Take a minute to read the poem and figure out where the simile is.

  6. What's a metaphor? • A metaphor is a word or phrase that describes one thing being used to describe another; on a simple level a phrase such as 'the heart of the matter' is a metaphor as matters do not actually have hearts. Metaphorical phrases are widely used in English.

  7. More practice! • What is the metaphor in this poem?
