  1. Protection & Control of Series Compensated Networks PART 3 Non Distance Protection PART 4 Dynamic Tests Z Q Bo AREVA T&D Automation

  2. Current differential & Directional Comparison relays are little affected by series compensation Potential a problem for Current Differential relay for long UHV lines where charging current is too high Directional Comparison might be a better choice in such case Cross Differential protection relay for double circuit lines is not effected by series compensation and does not require communication link Non Distance Protection PART 3

  3. Cross Differential Relay Comparison of electric quantities between the double lines Similar no fault, or external fault Difference internal fault Combination of two types of cross differential relay elements: • Current-balanced relay (CBR) • Directional transverse differential relay (DTR)

  4. Performance of Cross differential relay Tests conducted at China EPRI show • The relay is able to offer fast response for all fault types within the instant protected zone, which is about 90% of the total line length. • The relay is able to successively trip for all types of remote in zone fault outside the instant protected zone after remote CB operates. • The relay is able to clear high resistance fault for EHV long lines both instantly and successively. • The relay is able to trip the faulted phase only for evolving faults on both of the two lines.

  5. PART 3 New relay principles based on non-power frequency measurement • Super-imposed Component based Protection • Surge Impedance Relay • Noise Generated Protection • Boundary Protection • AREVA – Tsinghua Research collaboration

  6. Example 1 Noise Generated Protection

  7. Example 1 Frequency Response of Noise Generated Protection Scheme

  8. Example 2 Boundary Protection Technique

  9. Example 2 Boundary Protection - Attenuation of Busbar Capacitance to HF Signals

  10. Dynamic tests PART 4 • Most effective means for relay development and assessment of relay performance • Critic fault positions and conditions • RTDS tests for relay development • Analogue & RTDS tests for relay approval • AREVA – China EPRI development collaboration

  11. International Research& Development Collaboration Top Researcher Leading manufacturer Welknown test authority

  12. End of Discussion Thanks !
