In Your Life? Have you ever felt desperate? Have you been in a situation emotionally, socially, financially, physically, or spiritually when you could only see the danger ahead and you did not know how you were going to get out of the trouble that you were in?

Psalm 22 on Page 860 It has a note that it was intended to be a song, and it was a Psalm of King David. We can see a progression in the psalm and travel with the thoughts and emotions of David as he writes and we can end up where he ends up.
Matthew 27:46 on page 1548 From the sixth hour until the ninth hour darkness came over all the land. 46 About the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lamasabachthani?"--which means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"
As the world is wrapped in darkness Jesus cries out a quote from the Psalms. It is also worthwhile to note that the words that are quoted remain, and the gospels provide the translation. Jesus said “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani” which is neither full Hebrew or Syraic but a mixture called Syro-Chaldaic which seems to be the language that Jesus commonly spoke.
Psalm 22 on page 860. …No other psalm fitted quite so aptly the circumstances of Jesus at his crucifixion. Hence on the cross he took it to his lips (see Mt 27:46 and parallels), and the Gospel writers, especially Matthew and John, frequently alluded to it (as they did to Ps 69) in their accounts of Christ's passion (Mt 27:35, 39, 43; Jn 19:23-24, 28). No psalm is quoted more frequently in the NT.
Psalm 22 on page 860. My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from the words of my groaning? PS 22:2 O my God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer, by night, and am not silent. David is struggling with enemies and Jesus is struggling with the attack of Satan. There is a feeling of desperation and wanting to quit. Jesus asked if it was possible for this suffering to not happen (Mt 26:39, 42).
Psalm 22 on page 860. 3 Yet you are enthroned as the Holy One; you are the praise of Israel. PS 22:4 In you our fathers put their trust; they trusted and you delivered them. PS 22:5 They cried to you and were saved; in you they trusted and were not disappointed.
Psalm 22 Page 860 6 But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by men and despised by the people. PS 22:7 All who see me mock me; they hurl insults, shaking their heads: PS 22:8 "He trusts in the LORD; let the LORD rescue him. Let him deliver him, since he delights in him." (Mt 27:43)
Psalm 22 Page 860 9 Yet you brought me out of the womb; you made me trust in you even at my mother's breast. 10 From birth I was cast upon you; from my mother's womb you have been my God. 11 Do not be far from me, for trouble is near and there is no one to help. 12 Many bulls surround me; strong bulls of Bashan encircle me. 13 Roaring lions tearing their prey open their mouths wide against me.
Psalm 22 Page 860 14 I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. My heart has turned to wax; it has melted away within me. 15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth you lay me in the dust of death. (Jesus said “I am thirsty” John 19:28);
Psalm 22:16-18 Dogs have surrounded me; a band of evil men has encircled me, they have pierced my hands and my feet. 17 I can count all my bones; people stare and gloat over me. 18 They divide my garments among them and cast lots for my clothing.
Psalm 22:19-21 But you, O LORD, be not far off; O my Strength, come quickly to help me. 20 Deliver my life from the sword, my precious life from the power of the dogs. 21 Rescue me from the mouth of the lions; save me from the horns of the wild oxen.
Psalm 22:22-23 22 I will declare your name to my brothers; in the congregation I will praise you. 23 You who fear the LORD, praise him! All you descendants of Jacob, honor him! Revere him, all you descendants of Israel!
Psalm 22:24 24 For he has not despised or disdained the suffering of the afflicted one; he has not hidden his face from him but has listened to his cry for help. David, Jesus, or ourselves may feel desperate but God is listening.
Psalm 22:25-26 The Psalm now turns towards victory, even if victory has not been fully realized. From you comes the theme of my praise in the great assembly; before those who fear you will I fulfill my vows. 26 The poor will eat and be satisfied; they who seek the LORD will praise him-- may your hearts live forever!
Psalm 22:27-30 Page 861 All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the LORD, and all the families of the nations will bow down before him, 28 for dominion belongs to the LORD and he rules over the nations. 29 All the rich of the earth will feast and worship; all who go down to the dust will kneel before him-- those who cannot keep themselves alive. 30 Posterity will serve him; future generations will be told about the Lord.
Psalm 22:31 31 They will proclaim his righteousness to a people yet unborn-- for he has done it. God provides deliverance when we feel desperate but we need to remain faithful through the discomfort and adjust our perception so we can see God at work.
Are You Feeling Desperate? Are you willing to turn to God and he truth of His word for deliverance? When Jesus quotes Psalm 22 it reminds us of his feeling of desperation and his knowledge that victory would come through faithfulness.
Correcting an Untruth: Even if Jesus felt disconnected from God the truth was that he was not separated from God. One of God’s attributes is that He has always been and will always be. Jesus did not cease being God even for a second when he took on the sin of the world. Take deity away from any redeeming act of Christ, and redemption is ruined.
Jesus is The Sin Offering: According to Leviticus 6:25 and 27 this offering is a whole offering and it is called “most holy” and it verse 27 says “whatever touches any of the flesh will BECOME HOLY, and if any of the blood is spattered on a garment you must wash it in a holy place.” When Jesus took on our sins He became the sin offering that was most precious to God and He provided a way for us to become holy.
