  1. What does the word ‘survival’ mean? • Do we worry about surviving? • How do we get things (food, games, clothing, etc.)? • Did people always use money to get things they wanted or needed? • Have you ever traded something to get something else?

  3. Survival was the most important • All of the First Occupant groups had to survive • Food/Shelter/Clothing/ Tools • Everything they needed came from NATURE • The First Occupants DEPENDED on nature and the environment

  4. How did the First Occupant groups get things they could not find where they lived? • They would trade to get things to get other things!

  5. Trading • Trading is called the ‘Barter System’ • Some tribes did not have access to certain things • Groups used SURPLUS to trade with other tribes to get what was needed • SURPLUS means EXTRA

  6. Where do all the things we buy come from? • How does it get to our house? • What kinds of transportation do we use to get things to the store? • Do you think the First Occupants had the same types of transportation?

First Occupants: Trade networks • Each group lived in a different area  (vegetables, furs, stones beads, etc.) • Groups travelled and met up with each other to TRADE. • Goods were passed along and could go from one end of North America to another, going from one person to another to another.... • This is called: TRADE NETWORKS Movement of Shells Finish Start

  9. Why was trading important? • To get items that were needed (food, clothing, etc.) • Show generosity between the different groups • To help make friends between the different groups

  10. What does the word ‘Culture’ mean? Culture can include: • Languages, • Customs, • Singing and dancing, • Art, • Religions, • Ways of thinking, • Story telling • and a lot of other things

  11. Culture – Respect for the Environment • The First Occupants had lots of respect for nature Why? • The environment helped the First Occupants survive • Food, shelter, transportation, tools, etc.  provided by the environment

  12. Can you name different types of religions? • Can you tell me some of the customs associated with these religions? • Do you think the First Occupant had a religion of their own?

  13. Spirituality/Religion: Animism • The First Occupants were ‘Animists’ • They believed that everything had a spirit • They believed that spirits could keep living after death. • For example, a deer’s spirit could live on after the deer had died.

  14. Spirituality/Religion: Animism • Animism was connected to nature and the environment • Animism respected nature and the environment (plants, animals, etc.) • You can see the respect for nature in First Occupant art
