  1. Welcome to Cooperative Studies 501/601 Choose a JOB you LOVE and you’ll never HAVE to work a DAY in your LIFE -Confucius Teacher: Lori Gordon Room 168 Class Periods 3(C) & 4 (D)

  2. What kinds of jobs might you enjoy? • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2LCggmsCXk4

  3. What jobs have famous people had as teenagers • Would you have guessed that Kanye West was once a telemarketer? • That Stephen King was an industrial laundry worker? • Jennifer Aniston was a waitress! • Michael Jordan was a hotel maintenance worker! • Ashton Kutcher worked in the Cheerio cereal factory sweeping dust!

  4. What will we do/Learn in Co-Op? We’ll do lots of online quizzes! We’ll learn about health and safety We’ll read articles and discuss them We’ll spend time in the computer lab We’ll watch videos – some a bit gory, some a bit weird. You’ll write a business letter and mail it to your prospective placement.

  5. How do I get to go to work in this course? Some of you might find this intimidating….but…..you’ll be fine! • You need to pass the course component - this lasts from today until the 2nd week of March • 50% is a passing grade • It is required that you complete 220 hours for this 2 credit course – 60 in the classroom and 160 at your work placement.

  6. More juicy tidbits of info…. • You must have your own transportations –no getting drives from your friends • I need parental consent if you are driving yourself to and from the worksite (yes! Even if your 18) • If your job is within walking distance and you have two feet and a heartbeat – walk! (if your close and it’s raining – I’ll take pity on you and give you a lift(if your nice)

  7. Oh YEAH….I forgot… • YOU DON’T PAID – Your earning 2 course credits from taking this course, that’s payment enough! • If you miss 3 or more days in your work placement, you’ll need to make them up. Also, if you are sick, you are expected to call the school ( 902-961-7345 ext 221) and talk to me, and call your placement supervisor too (make sure you ask for their number your 1st day on the job). My cell number is 902-393-0823 – put these numbers in your phone. Don’t call or text me unless it has to do with Co-Op!

  8. The goal of this course is to try something New – to gain experience. Don’t be scared to try something new!

  9. Just a few more things… • You’re not able to be placed with a family member – or job that you already work at. • I need to approve of your placement and meet with the employer before I sign off on it. • Did I mention if the school finds out you’ve gotten paid for your Co-Op placement that your credits can and will be revoked.

  10. What are you responsible for while in your placement? To not waste time – this could work into a “paying” job for you! To be safe and know your rights and responsibilities To ask questions if you don’t understand something To complete a final project highlighting your placement –this is your final exam. Exact project to be determined at a later date.

  11. Please remember first and foremost that your representing Morell High – this class and this program  FYI – Co-Op is also available as a course in Summer School
