  3. King Jehoshaphat • Fourth King of Judah • Terminology for today • 10 tribe kingdom called Israel • “or the northern kingdom” • 2 tribe kingdom called Judah • “or the southern kingdom”

  4. Israel’s FaithfulnessUnder Their Kings • Likely peaked under David and shortly into Solomon’s reign • Degraded some with Solomon’s allowing his wives’ idolatry • Some recovery in the early years of Rehoboam • More idolatry in his later years • Due to wives’ & the split of the nation

Judah’s FaithfulnessUnder Their Kings • King Abijah • A real reformer against idolatry • Rehoboam & Judah at war with Israel • Abijah pleads for the re-uniting of the nations & for the 10 tribes to seek the Lord • Judah outnumbered 800,000 to 400,000 • Judah triumphs and Jeroboam loses 500,000 • Does not root out all idolatry • Allows some idolatrous “high places” to remain

  8. 2 Chronicles 17:1-4 1 Jehoshaphat his son then became king in his place, and made his position over Israel firm 2 He placed troops in all the fortified cities of Judah, and set garrisons in the land of Judah, and in the cities of Ephraim which Asa his father had captured 3 And the LORD was with Jehoshaphat because he followed the example of his father David’s earlier days and did not seek the Baals, 4 but sought the God of his father, followed His commandments, and did not act as Israel did

What Are We Looking For? • Good Kings yield… • Lessons to the prospective kings of the Gospel Age, the Church • Not a type or shadow • Their principles and dedication to God in governing Israelites correspond to our governing of a nation of one --- ourselves • Lessons are only from those Kings which recognized God as their head

  10. 2 Chronicles 17:5 5 So the LORD established the kingdom in his control, and all Judah brought tribute to Jehoshaphat, and he had great riches and honor.

  11. Blessings to Jehoshaphat • For Fidelity to God • Prosperity and Power • Converse is not True • Bad Kings were sometimes prosperous • Jehoshaphat’s Prosperity • Was an indication of God’s favor • Consistent with his desire to bless • Used it to further the Father’s interests

  12. 2Chronicles 17:6-10 • And he took great pride in the ways of the LORD and again removed the high places and the Asherim from Judah. 7 Then in the third year of his reign he sent his officials, Ben-hail, Obadiah, Zechariah, Nethanel, and Micaiah, to teach in the cities of Judah;

And Ahab slaughtered many sheep and oxen for him and the people who were with him, and induced him to go up against Ramoth-gilead.

And he said to him, "I am as you are, and my people as your people, and we will be with you in the battle." 4 Moreover, Jehoshaphat said to the king of Israel, "Please inquire first for the word of the LORD."

And they said, "Go up, for God will give it into the hand of the king." 6 But Jehoshaphat said, "Is there not yet a prophet of the LORD here that we may inquire of him?"

He is Micaiah, son of Imla." But Jehoshaphat said," Let not the king say so." 8 Then the king of Israel called an officer and said, "Bring quickly Micaiah, Imla’s son."

  29. 2 Chronicles 20:3-4 3 And Jehoshaphat was afraid and turned his attention to seek the LORD; and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah. 4 So Judah gathered together to seek help from the LORD; they even came from all the cities of Judah to seek the LORD.

  30. 2 Chronicles 20:9 9 Should evil come upon us, the sword, or judgment, or pestilence, or famine, we will stand before this house and before Thee (for Thy name is in this house) and cry to Thee in our distress, and Thou wilt hear and deliver us.

  31. 2 Chronicles 20:15-17 15 and Jahaziel the son of Zechariah said, "Listen, all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem and King Jehoshaphat: thus says the LORD to you, ‘Do not fear or be dismayed because of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours but God’s.

  42. 2 Kings 3:10-13 10 Then the king of Israel said, "Alas! For the LORD has called these three kings to give them into the hand of Moab."

  43. 2 Kings 3:10-12 11 But Jehoshaphat said, "Is there not a prophet of the LORD here, that we may inquire of the LORD by him?" And one of the king of Israel’s servants answered and said, "Elisha the son of Shaphat is here, who used to pour water on the hands of Elijah."

  44. 2 Kings 3:10-12 12 And Jehoshaphat said, "The word of the LORD is with him." So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him.
