Introduction • Magazines can contain all different things and be directed to all different people. For example, Women’s Weekly is directed to women whereas Total Girl is directed towards girls like me. There are magazines for men too such as Motor magazine. Some are directed towards everyone like the Woolworths Fresh magazine.
Magazines Dictionary Definition • A periodical publication containing articles and illustrations, typically covering a particular subject.
Paid Circulation • In this type, the magazine is sold to readers for a price, either on a per-issue basis in shops or by subscription, where an annual or monthly fee is paid and issues are sent by post to readers. This is what most magazines are today.
Non-Paid Circulation • This means that there is no cover price and issues are given away. For example, in street dispensers, airline in-flight magazine or included with other products or publications.
Edward Cave was the editor of the Gentleman’s Magazine and was the first person to use the term magazine on the analogy of a military warehouse containing various materials.
The Gentleman’s magazine • The fist issue of The Gentleman’s magazine was published in January 1731. • It ran uninterrupted for almost 200 years, until 1922.
Edward Cave He was born on February 27, 1691 in Newton, Warwickshire. His dad was a cobbler. He went to Rugby School which is a boarding school in Rugby, Warwickshire in the UK. Remarkably this school is still alive and running. But he was expelled after being accused of stealing from the headmaster Henry Holyoake. He worked at a variety of jobs, including timber merchant, reporter and printer. He died of Gout at the age of 63 on the 10th of January 1754.
Oldest Running Magazine • The oldest consumer magazine still in print is The Scots Magazine, which was first published in 1739, though multiple changes in ownership and gaps in publication totaling over 90 years weaken that claim. Loyd’s List was founded in Edward Lloyd’s English coffee shop in 1734; it is still published as a daily business newspaper.
How are they made? • Magazines are made out of paper that has been coated and buffed by a process called “supercalendering’’ in order to give a glossy appearance. During this process the paper is covered with a white clay called “kaolin’’ and put under high pressure rollers. The resulting shiny pages are suitable for colour photographs.
Can I recycle magazines? • Many people are afraid to recycle magazines. The glossy paper doesn’t contaminate the paper recycling. Magazines are now accepted by all curbside recycling programs that collect paper. According to Magazine Publishers of America, only 20% of magazines are recycled from home.
Where does a recycled magazine go? • Once recycled, magazines cannot be used to make new magazines. However, they do help to make newspaper, tissue, writing paper and paperboard. Don’t be shy about recycling magazines; recycled paper saves 60 percent of the energy needed to make new paper.

Glossary • Gout- Is a kind of arthritis that occurs when uric acid builds up in blood and causes joint inflammation. • Merchant- A person or company involved in wholesale trade, esp. one dealing with foreign countries or supplying merchandise to a particular trade.
