  2. The Story of the Big Three • Zeus, Hades, and Poseidon were the sons of the Titan Cronus. After Zeus overthrew Cronus, the three gods sat together to try to decide what part of the earth they should each rule. • Zeus: God of the Sky and Storms & is the ruler of Olympus • Hades: God of the Underworld and the Dead • Poseidon: God of the Sea and Earthquakes

  4. Who Is Poseidon? Most Prominent Qualities Role on Mount Olympus Brother of Zeus and Hades Son of Cronus Second only to Zeus in power amongst the gods • Protector of all waters • Ruler of the sea, earthquakes, and horses • He rules earthquakes because when he strikes the ground with his trident, the earth shakes • He rules horses because in an attempt to impress the goddess Demeter, Poseidon created the first horse (he wanted to create the most beautiful creature ever) • Protector of all waters • Husband of Amphitrite • Weapon is a trident (can shatter every object)

  5. How is Poseidon Relevant? How He Affected Greek Viewpoints of the World Allusion to Poseidon in Modern Culture Trident Gum In Greek, “tri” means three and “donti” means teeth. This leads us to a three-toothed (or three-pronged) spear. The name “Trident” in relation to the gum brand refers to the use of the stem “donti” as its literal meaning; tooth. The Trident gum brand also may have decided to use the name because Poseidon was one of the stronger, more powerful gods and the gum supports strong and healthy teeth. • Poseidon was very influential because the Greeks thought of him as a “multi-tasker” (held various roles as a god—sea, earthquakes, & horses)

  9. Who is Zeus? Most Prominent Qualities Role on Mount Olympus He was the God of the sky. He was the father of Ares, Athena, Apollo and Artemis, Aphrodite, Hermes, and Hephaestus. Brother of Hera, Poseidon, and Hades. Husband of Hera. He had many affairs; He betrayed Hera, his wife, countless times. • Zeus was the goddess of the sky and ruler of the Olympian gods. • He was Lord of the sky and also the rain God. • He was married to Hera, but is famous for his many affairs. • His primary weapon was the lightning bolt, which he hurled at those who frustrated him. • When Zeus shook his shield, known as the Aegis, he would start storms of mass destruction.

How He Affected Greek Viewpoints of the World Allusion to Zeus in Modern Culture Gatorade: the logo is a “G” with a lightning bolt through the center; one of Zeus’s symbols is a lightning bolt. It symbolizes his power, and Gatorade is supposed to be a “power” or “energy” drink. • Zeus, the king of gods, carried his favorite weapon, the Thunderbolt. • When it rained and there was thunder and lightning, the ancient Greeks believed that Zeus was venting his anger.
