  2. Definition of Sexting • Sexting means “sending or receiving sexually suggestive or explicit messages or pictures.” • Usually affects girls more • Can affect a boy when an older girl takes advantage of a “niave” boy

Statistics and Trends • People who use cell phones most often are more likely to sext. • 2010 survey of 23,000 students in Boston • 10% had sent a sexually suggestive photo • 5% had received a sexually suggestive photo • Sexting has declined in the past few years • Pew Research Center: 2% of teens aged 12-17 have sent a sext

  4. Dangers of Sexting • Dr. Jill Murray, teen counselor: • “greater impact on girls” • Girls more likely to harm themselves after picture is passed around • Teens who have sexted: • May suffer from symptoms of depression • More likely to attempt suicide

  5. Advice to teens • Don’t sext • Delete any sext sent to you immediately • Can be charged with child pornography

  6. Advice to parents • Monitor Facebook and cell phone use • Check cell phone bills • Take child’s phone at bedtime • (Most sexting occurs between 12A.M. and 5 A.M.) • Talk to teens calmly and listen to them
