  2. LECTURE (2) WHAT IS APPLIED LINGUISTICS?

  3. Applied Linguistics is.. • An interdisciplinary field of study that identifies, investigates, and offers solutions to language-related real-life problems. Some of the academic fields related to applied linguistics are education, linguistics, psychology, anthropology, and sociology.

  4. The Domains of Applied Linguistics • First and Second Language Acquisition, Language Pedagogy, Bilingualism and Multilingualism, Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC) “Computer-mediated communication (CMC) is defined as any human communication that occurs through the use of two or more electronic devices.[1] While the term has traditionally referred to those communications that occur via computer-mediated formats (e.g., instant messaging, email, chat rooms), it has also been applied to other forms of text-based interaction such as text messaging,

  5. Conversation Analysis (CA), Contrastive Linguistics, Language Assessment, Literacy, Discourse Analysis, Lexicography, Language Planning and policies, Pragmatics, Forensic Linguistics, and Translation. • This course will focus on the applications of linguistic principles or theories to “language pedagogy”, mainly Second Language Learning and Teaching.

  6. Example of the practical use of Applied Linguistics in real world • Forensic linguistics, legal linguistics, or language and the law, is the application of linguistic knowledge, methods and insights to the forensic context of law, language, crime investigation, trial, and judicial procedure. It is a branch of applied linguistics.

  7. There are principally three areas of application for linguists working in forensic contexts: • understanding language of the written law, • understanding language use in forensic and judicial processes, and • the delivery of linguistic evidence. • The discipline of forensic linguistics is not homogenous; it involves a range of experts and researchers in different areas of the field.

  8. Speech-language pathology is a field of expertise practiced by a clinician known as a Speech-language pathologist (SLP), also called speech and language therapist,[1] or speech therapist, who specializes in the evaluation and treatment of communication disorders and swallowing disorders.

  9. The components of speech production include: phonation, producing sound; resonance; fluency; intonation, variance of pitch; andvoice, including aeromechanical components of respiration. The components of language include: phonology, manipulating sound according to the rules of a language; morphology, understanding and using minimal units of meaning;

  10. syntax, constructing sentences by using languages' grammar rules; semantics, interpreting signs or symbols of communication to construct meaning; andpragmatics, social aspects of communication.[2]

  11. Clinical Linguistics is a sub-discipline of linguistics which involves the application of linguistic theory to the field of Speech-Language Pathology. Clinical linguistics, a branch of applied linguistics, is the use of linguistics to describe, analyze, and treat language disabilities. The study of linguistic aspect of communication disorders is of relevance to a broader understanding of language and linguistic theory. • The International Clinical Phonetics and Linguistics Association is the unofficial organization of the field, and was formed in 1991. The journal of Clinical Linguistics and Phoneticsis the major research journal of the field and was founded by Martin J. Ball. • Practitioners of clinical linguistics typically work in Speech-Language Pathology departments or linguistics departments. They conduct research with the aims of (i) improving the assessment, treatment, and analysis of disordered speech/language, and (ii) offering insights to formal linguistic theories.
