  2. Definitions: • Economy (n): • The larger marketplace (in which people buy, sell, work, etc) • Social/socioeconomic class: • Rank/status in society • Social hierarchy: • System of class rankings for a society. • Think of it like a pyramid

  3. Social Hierarchy • Social Mobility • The ability of someone in a society to move up or down along this pyramid • American Dream • The idea that anyone can move from bottom to top if they work hard enough • Could someone be stuck at the bottom? Why?

Causes of Poverty Liberal (left) (Democrats // Blue) Conservative (right) (Republicans // Red) Poverty is the fault of poor people (addiction, laziness, single-parent families, teenage pregnancies, dependence on gov’t) “big government”  overly regulating/taxing the rich + corporations Prevents them from investing, growing, hiring more people • Bad luck (illness, bad economy, outsourced jobs, etc) • Large companies + corporations not having the interests of the little guy. Possibly “evil”.

Solutions to Poverty Liberal (left) (Democrats // Blue) Poor should pull themselves up Reduce gov’t programs that “welfare queens” might take advantage of Reduces taxes on rich + businesses so they can invest / grow / hire new people Charities should take care of the poor Conservative (right) (Republicans // Red) • Government • Welfare system/safety net to catch those who might fall • Food stamps (SNAP) • Welfare checks • Healthcare • Education/training • How do we pay for it? • Tax the rich / tax businesses to pay for it

LBJ • Born in TX • Grew up relatively poor • President from 1963 – 1969 • VP for what assassinated president? • Became unpopular in the latter part of his presidency due to the Vietnam War… • …despite passing laws that JFK couldn’t • Civil Rights Act, 1964 • Many others including Clean Air Act, Higher Education Act, etc.
