    5. 3 tones? Aggressive tone ? Often pushy & brash Considers only 1 point of view his or hers Cares little about the feelings of others my way or the highway Win at all costs NOT an appropriate interpersonal communication tone for either professional or social setting

    6. Nonassertive Tone Shows lack of action & energy A person rarely speaks & often appears disinterested or uninvolved Communicates I lack self-confidence, dont believe that my ideas are good, or just dont care about what is going on. Particularly inappropriate at work

    7. Assertive Tone This is what youre after! Middle ground direct, yet tactful know when to talk & when to keep quiet

    8. Assertive things to consider before acting or speaking create an overall mood of harmony Location Timing Intensity Relationships Winner! ? Warm friendly voice; respectful words, calm, relaxed appearance; sends positive nonverbal signals to others; makes direct, yet nonthreatening eye contact

    13. Levels of Information Begin with predictions you use 3 levels of information Cultural Sociological or group individual

    14. CULTURAL You know the general characteristics that person shares with a large number of people like him or her. People in a culture may share a geographic area, common language habits, beliefs, values & rules or norms, for interactions. i.e. distances people stand from each other Acceptable eye contact

    15. CULTURE Geographic Differences Gender Norms ?rules learned while growing up

    16. SOCIOLOGICAL Information about a persons membership in a group. i.e. join scouts, Methodist Church, a fraternity or sorority, biking club Some groups share common characteristics, knowing the groups to which a person belongs can help you make predictions about how he or she will respond to certain messages.

    17. SOCIOLOGICAL STEREOTYPING Make a prediction about other people based on characteristics of the large group (culture) or smaller groups (sociological) to which they belong. Examples?

    18. Individual Level Information ? Learn special or unique characteristics of a person Know past experiences Know values, beliefs, and attitudes Know how he or she is different from all the other people in the many groups to which he or she belongs.

    19. 4 Stages of Relationships First Meetings Friendly Involved Stable

    20. First Meeting Usually use cultural & sociological information

    21. Friendly relationship No commitments are made to the relationship but individual level information is exchanged.

    22. Involved relationship Self-disclosure or personal information & feelings is exchanged

    23. Stable relationship the persons know each other extremely well & each is almost totally accurate in predicating feelings & probable behaviors of the other

    24. Assign Journal Write a synopsis of your communication with at least 3 different people (no names just general description) Use Ink Write clearly graded on ideas & clarity, not grammar
