  1. Wednesday, January 8th: Character Archetypes • LT: I can explore examples of character archetypes and identify 2-3 that would help develop my story. • ET: Write a list of the characters in the story you are beginning to create.

  2. What is an archetype? • Archetype: a perfect example of something because it has the most important qualities that belong to that type. • Understanding what archetype a character embodies helps us analyze our reading

  3. Who is the hero? • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GYOYewO_Veg • Young • Brave • Male or female • Courageous • Loves family • Good looking • Wants to “slay the dragon”/ save the day

  4. Who is the dark hero? • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aCTDVNgNUeY • Wears dark/dark features • Not always good looking • Mysterious or dark past • Dangerous • Character of action • Seeks revenge • Has to decide to do the right thing (is tempted)

  5. Who is the villain? • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iVlkZVAw8Gc • Verbal (talks a lot) • Intelligent • Terrorizes • Usually older • Strong • Evil • Powerful (stronger than the hero, more experience than hero) • Is in conflict with hero/dark hero

  6. Who is the damsel in distress? • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P-d9-5xTaM8 • Needs to be rescued/ cannot save self • The love interest • Can be male or female • Often is captured by the villain • Usually good looking/ young • A perfect match for the hero/dark hero

  7. Who is the sage/mentor? • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7aGaHZaLeM4&feature=related • Older • “fairy god mother” • Gives the hero advice • Leads the hero on his/her quest • Kind • Almost like a parent or grandparent to hero • Has lots of wisdom, experience, and skill

  8. Who is the fool? • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Myb-eAt_RxY • The side kick • The comic relief in tense situations • Less intelligent • makes jokes • Makes lots of mistakes • Can be good or evil (villains have fool sidekicks too)

  9. In your notebook: • Look back at the list of characters in your story and today’s handout of character’s archetypes. • Make notes of which archetypes you could use. • Your story must use at least two different archetypes.

  10. Economic Statistics: More Developed or Less Developed? LT: I can research and compare statistics in order to determine how economically developed a country is. ET: What stages do you think your shoe had to go through to get to you? Imagine it from the very beginning. Summarize how the shoe wound up in the service sector.

Economic Indicators • Today we will be researching some specific economic indicators on the CIA World Factbook. • You will use these statistics that you collect to label countries like a geographer. • We will look at three countries: The US, Uganda, and your country from your travel guide. • You will determine which country geographers would label as economically more developed and economically less developed using evidence.

  12. What makes a country More developed economically? • Higher GDP • Largest percentage of the GDP made up from the services sector. • A lower unemployment rate • A low percentage of the population is below the poverty line.

  13. What makes a country less developed economically? • Lower GDP • Largest percentage of the GDP made up from the agriculture or industry sectors. • A higher unemployment rate • A higher percentage of the population is below the poverty line.

  14. Directions • Go to the CIA World Factbook (Google this) • Click on the world map on North America, then the US. (Or go to the drop down menu – this is alphabetical) • Scroll down and click on the ‘Economy’ tab. • Scroll down to fill in the first column. • Repeat for Uganda and then your individual country. • If you finish early, go on to the questions in step 2.
