  1. Does the density of the clay change if you cut the clay in half?

  2. Manipulated Variable • The variable that is changed in the procedure is stated (or implied) in the written procedure. • For our question: • Cut the chunk of clay in half.

  3. Responding Variable • The change in the results because of changing one variable (manipulated) is stated or implied in the written procedure. • For our question: • The resulting density of the clay.

  4. Controlled Variables • Variables that are kept the same, it is either stated or implied in the procedure. • For our question: • Chunks have come from the same original piece/brand. • Same balance used for massing clay. • Same method and instruments used for finding volume. • Each initial chunk needs to be the same volume/size. • Temp of clay stays the same. • Temp of room must stay the same.

  5. Repeated Trials • More than one trial is planned and carried out. • For our question: • Repeat the entire procedure 2 more times (finding the density of the large chunk and small chunk) for a total of 3 trials. • Stating – “repeat the procedure” is not adequate. Must state which steps to repeat and how many times.

  6. Record Measurements • Procedure includes instructions to “record” measured or observable data periodically throughout the procedure. • For our question: • Record the volume of each chunk of clay. • Record the mass of each chunk of clay. • Record the density of each chunk of clay.

  7. Logical Steps • The steps of the investigation are logical with enough detail to repeat the procedure effectively. • For our question – • Correct sequenced (1st, 2nd, 3rd, …) • Not in paragraph form. • Someone from another class (i.e.: Mrs. William’s 6th graders should be able to follow each step without having to ask any questions).
