Only a quarter of boys from working-class backgrounds get professional or managerial jobs Just under 1 million 16-24 year olds are unemployed with 15% classed as NEET Widening participation matters because… Those living in the most advantaged areas are 3x more likely to participate in higher education than those in the most disadvantaged areas Around half of UK secondary schools and colleges did not provide any applications to medicine over a three year period Only 2.4% of NHS staff have a declared disability compared to 17% in population

  4. Widening Participation Strategy • Strategy reflects significant commitment but its not a short term fix • Builds upon local activity • Promotes coherence at national level • Enables HEE & NHS to engage across the wider system

  5. Our five strategic goals • Improve monitoring and reporting • Enhance health careers information, advice and guidance • Develop further understanding of what works • Expand collaborative outreach • Increase work-related experience opportunities

So far … • Preparation for work • Expanded WE toolkits for Dentists and GPs • School & employer engagement projects • HEI research projects on widening access - barriers and enablers • Access to medicine – Medical Schools Council, Sutton Trust and Social Mobility Foundation • NHS Employers campaign ‘Think Future’ • Promoting Health Ambassadors to talk about health careers – partnership with Inspiring the Future

  7. Preparation for work • 19,000 work experience opportunities (32% increase) • 6,500 work-related learning events • Employability programmes offered by half of larger organisations • More to do and better quality of data to collect

Next steps … • Todays event – a call for action and the need to do more • inclusion - encouraging applications from BAME and people with learning difficulties, mature learner/returners to work • HEE’s widening participation awards • School and community engagement framework launch • Everyone welcome!
