  2. Compliance • What words come to mind when you hear the word? • How many of you have been injured on the job? …off the job? What happened… (were all rules followed)?

  3. Self Assessment • As part of the supervisory team You are an EHS Compliance Leader • Ask yourself, ‘what is my attitude towards EHS compliance?’ (+ or -) • employees will follow your lead! • How do you respond to issues and challenges regarding compliance?

  4. Bad Mental Model • Regulators and regulations are mistakenly identified as the problem • Can cause rebellious attitudes • Lead to non-compliance resulting in NOVs, fines, incidents, etc. • Opportunity costs (economic loss, business interruption, agency actions, bad PR, etc., etc.)

  5. Review these terms… • Administrative Order • Behavior modification • Citation • Deposition • Exceedence • Fines

  6. And these… • Government Oversight • Mandatory • Non-compliance • OSHA-requirement • Violation • Will, Shall, Must • Zero Tolerance

  7. Your thoughts…????? Comments? Compliance terms can elicit a negative response. Supervisors… • Must maintain a positive attitude toward compliance • Should promote EHS Compliance, every day! • Need to keep employees actively engaged in EHS programs

Because we have to…??????????????? • Employee Safety and Health • Protects our resources (incident reduction) • Clean Water/Clean Air/Pollution Control • Protects our environment • Value Creation • Improves efficiency, increases production and profitability, etc. • Standardized Practices • Training, PPE, reporting, minimum requirements

  9. Compliance – a good thing! Compliance… • Saves lives • Minimizes risk • Eliminates hazards • Makes moral obligation legal requirements • Gets workers home to their families • Sets minimum standards • Creates jobs…

  10. Supervisors must… • Must what???? • Set the tone! • Make safety a core personal value! • Remind workers rules are designed to protect them, their co-workers, and their families! • Continually strive for 100% Compliance!

  12. Remind employees that EHS programs add value by… • Promoting compliance • Protecting employees • Minimizing losses • Improving efficiency • Preserving the environment

  13. Keep EHS Positive • Be seen in the work area • Management by Walking around (MBWA) • Address issues as they come up • Solicit input from employees • Investigate employee concerns • Recognize employees when they go the extra mile • Anticipate change, continually improve

  14. Take the Lead • Actively look for gaps/deficiencies in the workplace to ensure compliance • Speak up when you see an unsafe act • Address unsafe conditions when they arise or are discovered • Talk the talk(at every opportunity) • Walk the walk(lead from the front)

  15. Supervisors must … • Understand compliance is a good business practice • Realize compliance is the law • Let employees know compliance is the minimum expectation • Help employees adjust their mental models, accordingly

  21. People need recognition • Most employees want to do the right thing • We all need positive reinforcement -Improves employee relations; -Encourages team building; -Increases communication; and -Builds self-esteem and stronger teams -It’s contagious!! • Result: A more effective Safety Process

  22. Effective communications • Communicate with crew members regularly regarding compliance • Welcome challenges/address concerns • Be humble and respectful • Expect/solicit employee input • Investigate employee complaints • Share findings with employees

How do you ensure that your safe work practices are executed correctly in your facility? How do you know that your highest risk EHS and business interruption events are mitigated?
