  2. Warm Up Strand 24: Classification and Logical Reasoning – Grade 8 • Joan is taking a 100 problem multiple choice math test. For every problem that she answers correctly, Joan earns two points. For every problem that she answers incorrectly, Joan loses one point. If Joan does not answer a problem, she neither earns nor loses points. If Joan scores 182 on this test, use the table below to show four possible ways that she could have scored 182 points.

Writing Open Ended Questions Complete the pattern and explain how you determined your answer. • R – Restate the Questions • I determined the answer • A – Answer the question • is a circle. • F – For example/by/because • For example, the pattern is an A/B pattern. The pattern begins with a circle (A), then a square (B), then a circle (A), then a square (B), so the next shape has to be a circle (A). • T – Tie it all up • By following the A/B pattern I determined my answer.

Providing Meaningful Feedback • INDIVDUAL FEEDBACK SAYS, “THE TEACHER VALUES MY LEARNING.” • Timely: • Provide immediate feedback on facts • Delay feedback slightly for more comprehensive reviews • Amount: • Prioritize: Pick the most important points • Choose points that relate to major learning goals • Consider student’s developmental level • Mode: • Select the best mode of feedback: Quick oral comment, student meeting, or written feedback directly next to area of concern.

Providing Meaningful Feedback • Recommendations for effective feedback: • Avoid personal comments • Be descriptive • Use positive comments to describe what was done well • Make feedback specific enough so that students know what to do but not so specific it is done for them • Communicate respect for the student as an active learner • Ask questions
