  3. UCAS: Important Points • 5 choices • Deadlines: • 15th October – Medicine/Veterinary Science/Dentistry/Oxford/Cambridge • 15th January – all other applicants • Check internal deadlines

  4. Personal Statement • One Personal Statement • 4000 characters long (including spaces) • Default 12 font • In paragraphs – easier to read • Don’t repeat information already on your form • Most important section of form – sell yourself!

  5. Dos and Don’ts • Don't feel that you need to use elaborate language • Don't cover anything irrelevant • Don't rely on a spellchecker • Don't leave it to the last minute • Don't multitask • Don't lie or copy

  6. Dos and Don’ts • Do check university and college prospectuses, websites and UCAS Entry Profiles • Do create a list of ideas • Do use your best English • Do produce several drafts • Do ask for feedback • Do be enthusiastic

  8. The Course Main points: • Why are you applying for the course? • Why are you suitable for the course? Also think about... • Your current studies • Supporting activities • Why university?

  9. Work Experience • Particularly important for practical courses • Link to course where possible • Include part time jobs, placements, work experience and voluntary work • State what you enjoyed and what you gained/learned

  10. Achievements • In and out of school/college • Accredited and non-accredited • E.g. DofE, Aimhigher, music, sport, school council, organising events... • What skills have you acquired?

  11. Hobbies and Interests • Link to course where possible • Shows you are a well rounded individual • State why you enjoy what you do and what you have gained/learned

  12. Future Plans • What do you want to do after your course? • How do you want to use the knowledge and experience that you gain? • How does the course relate to your plans for the future?
