  3. Overview In the Gifted Horizons program, students will be taught several subjects at an advanced level. These will include English and the game of chess throughout their experience in the program. “Into The Unknown”, is a program that gives your child a beginner's knowledge in algebra. Children will be expected to follow a series of standards to follow during their experience that will be listed in the next slide.

  4. Standards • I will use creative problem solving to reach solutions to real life problems. • I will use logical problem solving strategies to analyze and solve problems. • I will use various critical thinking skills to solve complex problems efficiently. • I will be a responsible citizen • I will be a self-directed learner.

  5. Standards Continued • I will communicate clearly and effectively. • I will be a producer of excellence. • I will collaborate with other learners in a manner that positively affects reaching the group goal. • I will use research skills to investigate and present data.

  6. CHESS During student’s encounters with the Horizons program, they will learn the strategy game, chess. You may think, “why play games when they can learn advanced math?” Well, this game will increase children’s awareness to what’s happening around them as well as increase their ability to strategize in the real world.

  7. Caesar's English While participating in this unit, Greek, Spanish, and Latin roots that make up our language today will be taught with the utmost care by the teachers. You and your child will both have an increased knowledge of our language.

  8. Into the Unknown In the subject of math, students will complete a unit entitled, “Into the Unknown”. This will further the children's understanding of the depths of math by introducing algebra. This beginners knowledge will grow into relatively complex equations involving negatives and variables.

  9. Future Programs Most of the programs students participate in will last the duration of their experience, but some will grow into new programs or come out of the blue. Here is a small list of programs you and your child can expect. • Making Ends Meet (3rd grade, Economics) • Hands on Equations (4th & 5th grades, Math) • Current Events (all grades, citizenship)
