  1. Carol E. Smith: A Librarian In the Making

  2. An early love of reading It all began with Run, Rabbit, Run! by Beverley Randell (1969). I read it aloud to my mother as a preschooler (thanks, Mom!), and a lifelong passion for books was launched. [Love #1: books]

  3. Childhood fantasies… I dreamt of putting my bed in the children’s section of our neighborhood community library…

  4. Childhood fantasies… …as this was neither practical nor encouraged, however, I began amassing my own library at an early age.

  5. First Crush at Age 7 A grade-school showing of the musical 1776! led to a life-long love affair with John Adams, our 3rd president. By age 12, I’d collected a substantial library on John, including a full set of The Adams Papers. [Love #2: history]

  6. In my teen years.. I discovered languages and cultures, and began to dream of traveling the world. Studying languages and collecting language books became a favorite pastime. [Love #3: languages] Image credit: http://www.cas.usf.edu/languages/

  7. Hiking On annual family camping trips, I cultivated a love of wild places. I vowed I would someday live in a place where there were hiking trails… [Love #4: wild places]

  8. In college… I pursued my passion for languages, majoring in Arabic, lisan al-mala’ika (tongue of the angels). [Love #5: Arabic] …I tossed in a second major, Economics, for practicality’s sake. 

  9. My junior year… I studied at the American University in Cairo, a fantastic experience. I traveled throughout Egypt and the Middle East, including the Libyan border, Jerusalem, the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, and Jordan, engaging in volunteer work along the way.

  10. After College I joined the oil industry (futures trading), seeing it as a way to eventually live and work in the Middle East… ..but then I fell in lovelove, and plans changed.  [Love #6: Joseph]

  11. Literacy volunteering Kept me busy for several years… …and proved a most convenient reason to spend more time in libraries. 

  12. In the early 1990’s, I moved to Montana as part of an exciting venture to create an automatic commodity futures trading program, based on chaos theory. NY to Montana Unfortunately, we didn’t make any money… …but I did find my hiking trails!

  13. Public Records Research I was invited to return to NY, but chose to stay in beautiful Montana. So - - I joined a fledgling startup firm specializing in public records research, and devoted myself to building the company. I discovered a strong passion for research. It was always there… [love #8: research]

  14. The little company that could As VP of Operations, I helped grow the company from 1 to 60 employees in a 6-year period. It was a wild ride! The fun factor declined somewhat after the company sold in 2001, but by then my passion for records research had already found a new outlet…

  15. A new love comes along.. A chance conversation introduced me to genealogy in 2000. Complex, never-ending research with a personal catch? I was hooked! [Love #9: genealogy]

  16. Discovery of digital libraries By 2002, I was traveling to perform research and attend conferences, and was helping people all over the world as a Missoula County research volunteer. One night I ran into a digitized historic newspaper project - and an exciting new world of digital libraries was revealed to me. It was clearly time to take stock… [Love #10: digital libraries] http://www.brooklynpubliclibrary.org/eagle/

  17. Simple math A love of books + A love of history + A love of language + A love of cultures + A love of research + A love of digital projects = Librarianship!

  18. Drexel University Drexel’s balanced approach to both innovative library technology and traditional library principles proved a perfect fit. Library fever soon took over and I bid farewell to my career, devoting myself fulltime to my MLIS studies.
