  1. Adaptive Learning for Vessel-Specific Training The New Wave Conference June 13, 2014 Murray Goldberg Marine Learning Systems

  2. The Problem … • We divide training into two parts: cert. & fam. • Most, when asked, feel both critical • …with fam. becoming increasingly important • Yet different training rigor applied to each • Standardized & approved courses / Job Shadow • (Beginning to change - type-specific ECDIS) • … But why is famming so loosely defined/reg.?

  3. Why isn’t Famming Rigorous & Standardized? • Because it is hard! • With cert., have luxury of one-size-fits-all • … but with vsl-spec., every training event differs • Consider the BC Ferries example: • 10 – 20 positions on a vessel • 35 vessels • 25 routes • Think of it as building a textbook – you can’t! • … so what did BC Ferries decide to do? …

  4. BC Ferries Case Study • Recognized imposs. to build thousands of progs. • Sol’n was SEA: Standard. Ed. And Assessment • …Part of the “SailSafe” initiative • SEA is “blended learning” training & fam. prog. • Includes BCF know., generic comp & spec comp. • Blended = far superior outcomes • The “problem” part was vessel-, route- & terminal- specific equip know. & competencies • How to create stnd. reference materials? ….

  5. Adaptive Learning • Where the LMS builds prog. tailored to trainee • Asks trainee for position, vessel, route, terminal • Generates custom “textbook” based on answer • Likewise for all assessments • Likewise for trainer ref. & training materials • This way specific layouts, equipment, routines are taught & tested in standard & rigorous way • Not otherwise possible • … How does it work? …

  6. Adaptive Learning: How Does it Work? • Instead of courses, use small “learning objects” • Each teaches one comp. (eg – engine startup) • Each tagged according to position, vessel, etc • In add., have “training framework” • Indicates how objs. are asmbld. into “textbook” • Now, when trainee indicates training needs: • LMS asmbls. needed objects accrd. to framework • Result looks as though built by hand • … Great benefits …

  7. Adaptive Learning: Benefits • For Trainee: • Better training! • One authoritative source of information (tr / ref) • Always up to date • For Organization: • Better training! • Now possible to create and maintain • Changes to leaning made in one place • Vessel changes trivial • … and it works …

  8. Adaptive Learning: Benefits • SailSafe Results … • NOT solely due to SEA, • But easy to argue that training comonent had significant effect …
