  3. Their Sites and Campaigns On the first day of Training, each campaign manager presented 6 PowerPoint slides ontheir site, organization, threats to conservation, and goals of their Pride campaign to help the team get to know one another better.

Objectives of First University Phase After the first university phase (nine weeks), each campaign manager will be able to: • Develop a project plan for a successful social marketing campaign. • Utilize skills (toolbox) tomanage projects. • Leverage effectivecommunication skills toachieve conservation results. Ariela presents the objective tree that willbear fruit as weekly objectives are achieved.

  6. Objectives for Week #1 After week one, each campaign manager will be able to: • Describe their new colleagues, including their home countries, previous experiences with conservation, and expectations of the Rare Pride program. • Navigate their way around the Georgetown and Arlington areas. • Articulate the objectives of the entire training. • Utilize a common language to describe the Rare Pride Campaign Program. • Identify five toolbox skills and describe how they can be used for conservation.

  7. Topics (and Skills) Taught in Week #1 • Telling Compelling Stories • Taking Good Pictures • Understanding Cultural Contexts • Making and Giving GoodPresentations • Managing Conflict The six-step process for solving conflicts

  8. Events of the Week • Lecture and Virtual Tour of Georgetown’s Lauinger Library. • Individual presentations, conducted by each Campaign Manager, for Rare staff and board of directors. • Lecture, ArvindSinghal, the Samuel Shirley and Edna Holt Marston Endowed Professor of Communication, and Senior Research Fellow, Sam Donaldson Center for Communication Studies, University of Texas, El Paso.

  9. Getting to Know One Other Socially Cohort and Rare staff membersenjoy a meal of traditional Vietnamese noodle soups, which many had never had before. Gaana showing pictures of hissite in Mongolia

Some “Firsts” of the Week • First snowfall for our campaign managers from Fiji, Chuuk, and Madagascar • To their surprise and delight, snow does not fall in ice cubes! • First squirrel sighting • First sighting of a dog wearing ajacket (“The owner must have thought itwas cold” – Gildas) • First sushi dinner for Gaana andBogi from Mongolia

  13. Getting to Know the Campaign Sites Campaign managers give presentations on their Pride sitesand conservation goals. Working together to complete the site matrix.

  14. Exploring Washington, D.C. Field trip to the Georgetown library. Presenting initial perceptions of what their Washington, DC experience would be like.

  15. Practicing Storytelling Skills Groups take turn presenting their most compelling stories to the class.

  16. Learning about Conflict Resolution Exploring the differences between unresolved and mediated conflicts

  17. 1-minute Presentations on Campaigns Tao presents her Pride campaign in a one-minute format to Rare staff, several Rare board members, and team members. After learning and practicing this skill earlier in the day, each campaign manager presented their campaign in the afternoon to great success!
