  1. Chp. 22.1 Review • Name the male and female reproductive structures. • Which division is the smallest and it contains hornworts? • What are the two types of liverworts? • Which generation is dominant. • How does water get into nonvascular plants?

  2. Non-Seed Vascular Plants Chp. 22.2

  3. Non-seed vascular plant • Has vascular tissue • What is vascular tissue’s function? • Elongated cells that absorb water and transport water throughout the plant • They do not have seeds. To reproduce they release spores.

  4. Alternation of generations • There are two stages • Sporophyte • Gametophyte • The spore producing sporophyte stage is dominant.

  5. In some non-seed plants, spore bearing leaves form a cluster called a strobilus. • A fern gametophyte is called a prothallus. • The gametophyte stage is small and grows underground. It has the archegonium and the antheridium on it and it requires a constant film of water for fertilization.

  6. Lycophyta • Commonly called club mosses and spike mosses. • The sporophyte generation is dominant.

  7. Arthrophyta • Common name – horsetails • They contain silica which can be used as an abrasive. They were once used to clean cooking utensils.

  8. Pterophyta • Called ferns. • Fern structures • Rhizome – thick underground stem • Fronds – leaves of a fern • Sporangium – compartment where spores are held • Sorus – cluster of sporangium
