  3. 1ststory outline • setting • what does it look like, use clear descriptive words • time period • past, present, future, spring, summer, fall, winter • main characters • just one or two • describe some details about their appearance and personality

  4. 2ndpurpose • Why do you want to write this story? • to entertain • to inform • to teach • to make your reader think e.g. a mystery

  5. 3rdstory map • Beginning (introduce details about setting, time, characters, problem) • Middle • 1st critical event (1st exciting point/important event) • 2nd critical event (1st exciting point/important event) • 3rd critical event (1st exciting point/important event) • Climax: (the part when the reader cannot put your story down) • End (provide all the rest of the information the reader needs)

  6. 4thwriting • Write your story! • refer to your notes about the setting, time period, characters • refer to your outline to help you guide your writing • as you write, you may change your original ideas, it is your right to flow with your creative ideas as long as your story retains a clear beginning, middle and end

  7. 5th vocabulary • When your story is finished… • choose five words in your story and replace them with juicier ones • you want to add words that help your reader see your setting, hear the sounds, feels the emotions • I have word lists that are may help your with this • a thesaurus will also help • underline these new words in your story

  8. 6thproof-reading • reread your story very carefully • do you have a clear beginning, middle, end • does your story make sense • use our editing checklist

  9. 7thinferential questions • write three inferential questions about your story (print them after your story, you will not type these) • your reader will have to ‘read between the lines’ in order to answer these questions

  10. 8th peer proof-reading • have a peer proof-read your story and answer your questions

  11. 9th final editing • read your peer’s answers to your inferential questions (you may need to add some more details to your story if they were unable to answer your questions) • check your peer’s edits, fix your corrections and prepare your story for typing

  12. 10th publishing • type your story • add any pictures or enhancements you choose • let your creativity flow
