  1. Performance-Based Tasks (PBTs) ELA Assessments that Promote College and Career Readiness

  2. Why a New Assessment? These innovative (new & inventive) PBTs: • align with Common Core standards and new ELA units. • address how we use and access information (ex., Internet).

  3. Why a New Assessment? These innovative PBTs also: • prepare learners to synthesize information from multiple diverse sources. • emphasize how students use what they know.

  4. Grades and PBTsin HCPSS Teachers will usePBTs to: • help them determine how to improve student learning during instruction (formative purpose) • help them evaluate student learning progress and achievement after instruction (summative purpose)

  5. Grades and PBTsin HCPSS In the future, grading options (in the future) will vary because PBTs will have different purposes. PBTs are being introduced this year, so, currently, students will: • receive guided instruction. • receive participation/completion credit. • organize their PBTs in writing portfolios. COMPLETION CREDIT

  6. PBTs in HCPSS 2014-2015 WHO participates in PBTs? middle and high school students will take them independently (no groups) WHEN will I have PBTs? at least twice a year (there is a PBT for each thematic unit) HOW LONG will it take to complete a PBT? approximately three classperiods

  7. PBT: Required Skills • taking effective notes, including self-generated Cornell notes • deconstructing a prompt (R.A.F.T.S.) • synthesizing information across multiple diverse sources • using text evidence to supporta thesis • or claim • organizing information in writing

  9. PBT Day One • Deconstruct prompt to set a purpose for reading. 4. Answer five text-dependent questions. • 2. Read anchor text. • 3. Take Cornell notes on the anchor text.

  10. PBT Day Two Independently take notes on each additional source (note-taking method is your choice). • Read three support texts (additional sources are in avariety of formats—video clips, images, articles, poems, etc.).

  11. PBT Day Three Compose final essay using information from anchor text and TWO of the three additional sources.

  12. PBT: Real-world Value Discussion Question: How might this new form of assessment be more valuable than previous assessment formats (multiple choice, memorization, etc.)?
