  1. HEROES VS. CELEBRITIES

  2. HERO • A hero is authentic, whereas a celebrity represents derived (original) values • A hero has achieved something • Hero portrays their true self with all of their flaws • The Hero created himself

  3. A Hero often remains nameless, such as the New York City firefighters who sacrificed their own lives on 9/11 to save others • Another example is Dave Sanders who is the teacher at Columbine High School who lost his life saving students on April 20, 1999 • Or Tom Burnett, the hero of United Flight 93 that crashed in Pennsylvania on 9/11 • These are examples of true modern heroes, who made the ultimate sacrifice of their lives to protect others.

  4. CELEBRITIES • Celebrity is merely well known • Celebrity portrays an image, rather than her true self, with all its flaws and inconsistencies • Celebrity created by his/her image

  5. Celebrities, like Madonna, continually re-invent themselves to stay in the public eye • What becomes important is not who Madonna really is, but what image she is projecting this year • What we see is not a true person, but the product of a brilliant marketing strategy

  6. Characteristics of a Hero • A hero does things to help others. • A hero contributes to society in a positive way. • A hero doesn't always know anyone else knows what he or she does. • A hero doesn't usually receive money and may not receive status for the deed. • The work a hero performs often goes unnoticed. • A hero may or may not be recognized by the media. • A hero uses talents or abilities to impact others or society in a positive way.

  7. Characteristics of a Hero • Courageous • Bravery • Determination • Dedication • Selflessness • Sacrifice • Wisdom

  8. Characteristics of a Celebrity • A celebrity is highly visible-well known. • A celebrity is usually recognized for some form of talent, beauty, or material quality. • A celebrity is usually recognized for a performance. • A celebrity's image or recognition in the media may change.

  9. Similarities of Heroes and Celebrities • Some celebrities have performed heroic acts using their wealth and fame. • Some celebrities who are also considered heroes include Oprah Winfrey, Christopher Reeves and Angelina Jolie. • These celebrities have used their wealth and fame to improve lives of others by starting foundations to help people in need.

  10. Differences between Heroes and Celebrities • A celebrity is often rich and famous for talents such as singing, and acting. • Heroes -- although many never become famous -- are self-sacrificing and help advance others, not themselves. • Examples of self-sacrificing heroes are nurses, fireman, volunteer workers and Anne Frank • Examples of celebrities who are not especially known for heroic acts are actress Lindsay Lohan and celebrity personality Paris Hilton.
