Al “Scarface” Capone • “Big Cheese, Hard Boiled” • Capone controlled speakeasies, bookie joints, gambling houses, brothels, horse and race tracks, nightclubs, distilleries and breweries at a reported income of $100,000,000 a year. • Valentine’s Day Massacre-7 dead with 150 bullets • He was the first to open soup kitchens after the 1929 stock market crash and he ordered merchants to give clothes and food to the needy at his expense.

Henry Ford • Ford Motor Company founded in 1903 • In 1926, the Model T was outdated and out sold by General Motors, but with introduction of the Model A and V8. • Not only was Ford a business man but a politician. During World War I, he and 170 others went to Europe seeking peace. • Ford also ran for Senate on the Democratic ballot, speaking out against labor organizations, United Auto Workers. • Ford supported charitable work by setting up an historical museum in Greenfield, Michigan. • Also responsible for Ford Foundation which provided grants for research, education, and development.

  6. Charles Lindbergh • 1927: set record for Ca-NY flight (22 hrs.) • 5/20-5/21, 1927: Flew first, solo, nonstop flight from NY to Paris (33 hrs. 30 min.) • 1929: Awarded Congressional Medal of Honor

  7. Red Grange • Played at University of Illinois • 1924: defeated Michigan (unbeaten in 20 games) • 3 time All-American • Played professionally for Chicago and New York.

  8. Johnny Weissmuller • Won 5 Gold Medals over 1924, 1928 Olympics • Set 28 World Records • First sub-minute 100m Freestyle (58.6 sec.) • Went on to star as Tarzan in twelve movies.

  9. Jack Dempsey • “Manassa Mauler” • Heavyweight title holder 1919-1926 • 1921: Battle of the Century • 9/3/1926: lost heavyweight title to Gene Tunney. • 1927: Battle of the Long Count.
