  1. Heritage fair What is it ? How do I start ?

  2. Heritage fair – similar to Science fair History can be very fun when students study their own personal Canadian heritage or when they study about their own community. The learning outcomes covered are in Social studies, language arts and fine arts.

  3. Similar to the Science fair • Most projects are completed in similar style to Science fair projects. A back board with historical information, and an of the following could be displayed: pictures or photocopies of pictures, artifacts or models, examples of paintings or crafts completed by the student. As well, some sing songs, dance or do skits. Some have family trees showing how they are related to the person they wrote about. Others had maps showing the places the project depicted.

  4. How do I present ? • The heritage fair is a way to make social studies and history , more hands on and meaningful to you. You need to choose a topic you want to know more about or are interested in. Then you can research it and display your information in a way that appeals to you. • Some students do poems, skit, dress as a historical figure, do a poster board display, or prepare a recipe.   5. What does heritage mean ? • Heritage means culture and traditions, stories information etc. handed down from past times. • Canadian Heritage refers to Canadian culture. Projects must be about Canada. If you are thinking of doing cultures that immigrated to Canada you should focus on what why they moved here, what process etc.

  6. What can I do my project on ? • You may wish to see what kind of prizes are awarded and gear your project toward that. Check out links further on in this slide show.   7. What can I do my project on ? • Deciding is difficult. Sometimes an idea comes quickly to some kids and they are off and running. If nothing is jumping out at you try these methods. • Start with your family tree. Fill it in.   8. What can I do my project on ? • Is there an artifact, photo, or medal that you know of ?Perhaps it is in your house. • That might be something that triggers your interest in a project. What is it ? How could you research and tell about it ? • If it is valuable how could you display it ? – take a picture.

  9. What can I do my project on ? • A famous politician ? • Confederation ? • Early Setters ? Pioneers? A model of early cabins ? • Celebrations ? • Housing? Buildings ? • Symbols of NB / Canada ?

  10. What can I do my project on? • Yourself ? Meanings of names? Family history? • FADS or fashion time lines ? Slang. Clothing music hobbies • Native culture ? Art ? Artists? Music singers ? • Mining ? Railways? • Cultural groups of your community ? • Communication, school , important women, hockey ? Sports heroes, businesses of NB, what is NB famous for ? • Royal connections ?

Prizes and themes • Monday, February 6, 2012Diamond Jubilee Heritage Fair Award Announced • As people across Canada today marked the 60th anniversary of the Accession to the Throne of Queen Elizabeth II, events in New Brunswick included the announcement of a special award which we will part of New Brunswick’s Heritage Fair programme. • In each school district, one award will given out to the student(s) whose heritage project is judged to have the most merit on a topic related to the Monarchy in New Brunswick, including royal tours, past and present Lieutenant-Governors, the Queen’s role in the province, etc. • Click this link to see more prizes that are awarded. • http://www.gnb.ca/0131/HeritageFairPrix-e.asp
