  2. Launching the Attack • Germans launched Operation Barbarossa on June 22, 1941 • Their reason for taking Stalingrad was to cut off resources to the north and to provide a good right flank for invading the Caucasus • The Red Army was weaker and called on factory workers to reinforce them

  3. The Beginning • Germans shelled the entire city, reducing it to rubble • The Luftwaffe took superiority in the air • The Germans crossed the Volga and the end of August • The battle moved to close quarters in the street • Fighting on the MamayevKurgen was very merciless

  4. The Middle • The fight broke into a stalemate • Yakov Pavlov turned a 4 story building into a fortress • Soviets fought back with Operation Uranus • They encircled the German Sixth Army and they were slowly killed or starved

  5. The End • Germans started to try and evacuate • Germans were pushed out of the city and the Soviets won • Almost two million people died during the battle • It was the deadliest battle in World War Two
