  1. Coal mines by Finlay and Sarah

  2. Old days 1:heres a map of the British coal mines

  3. 2: the purpose of coal was … it was a source of fuel and heat and energy. Here's some examples of what coal is used for Train = if the train didn’t have coal acting as its fuel it wouldn’t run Fire Place = needs coal to get heat Factory’s = need energy and if some factories didn’t have coal they wouldn’t run

  4. 3:The people that worked in the coal mines were … it was generally kids 13 and young any older and they would be useless because tall or too withered . In one unnamed coal mine, 58 deaths out of a total of 349 deaths in one year, involved children thirteen years or younger. Life for all those who worked underground was very hard. The boys generally worked in the mines and brought the coal up to the surface. The girls worked on the surface sorting out the different types of coal. But occasionally the girls would work in the .mines to This is a boy working in the mines This is a woman sorting out coal

  5. 4. 3 conditions that are safety hazards while working in coal mines are gas explosions, gas poisoning, and roof collapse .

  6. 5: when a coal miner died they generally just threw him into a un active shaft were they coal was all gone or bury them in there. But on occasions they would bring the dead to there family if they could find them.

  7. The coal mining in the 21st century

  8. The company Our company that we chose is BHP Billiton Ltd they are located in Melbourne, Australia. They are a multinational mining and petroleum company. The products that they mine are diamonds, coal, manganese , gold, petroleum, aluminium, copper, natural gas, nickel, uranium& silver. They are worth $72.22 billion .

  9. The company The company owner is Mr. Billiton . Mr. Billiton doesn’t hire children but he hires graduated students, women and men. The company was established in 1885. The Australian law is that you are unable to hire kids under the age of 18 to work in a fully operational mining facility. But that’s not to say that in other countries were they have mines kids aren’t working in these harsh facilities.

  10. The company Right now the company is in full swing and I am pretty sure that the workers are getting payed well but that’s not to say that in the future when there not getting as many resources that they will put the price down. And in third world countries they are probably paying there workers less. A union is an organized group of workers who come together to make decisions about the conditions of their work. 3 things that a union helps workers out are that unions raise wages of unionized workers by roughly 20% and raise compensation, including both wages and benefits, by about 28% and that the impact of unions on total nonunion wages is almost as large as the impact on total union wages and unionized workers receive 26% more vacation time and 14% more total paid leave.

  11. The company A “non-union” miner that is hired is called a scab. If the scabs cross the picket line then an after affect will be that they get beat up and they will go on strike.

  12. Dangers that miners face 3 safety ricks that coal miners face today are 1. gas explosions because they occur in coalmines from a build-up of methane gas. 2. Cave ins occur when the walls and ceilings of underground mineshafts have not been properly secured. 3. Chemical leaks occur when the chemicals are not securely stored. These safety issues can be fixed by either having a mores secure place to keep chemicals and having a more sturdy ceilings and walls for under ground min shaft and this will probably cost more money.

  13. Today I The raven underground coal project is a proposed mine site which is mainly located on private land in the Comox valley on Vancouver island. The owner of this company is John Tapics. CEO of the raven underground mine project. People want to work at this coal mine because they can earn up to $115,700 per year and if you live in the Comox valley you don’t have to travel very far. More then 300 people have already showed their interest in the raven underground coal project and in total 400 people will be doing different jobs in the coal mine. They will only try to offer jobs to people in BC so that it benefits BC folks

  14. II & III The other primary industry that may be affected will be the Comox valley water supply. Another primary industry that may be affected will be the first nations. But they promised to understand the impact of the project and will respect traditional rights of land which are aboriginal rights and aboriginal titles. The raven project is committed to recycling water. It is estimated that 330 to 490 cubic meters of water will be used per day for coal washing. This is equivalent to the amount of water a large size hotel uses in a day. An essential for making steel is smelting when your smelting your going to need heat and the heat source will be coal. Because steel is so expensive they probably would invest in making a smelter

  15. IV Roberta Stevenson is worried about the coal mines is to optimistic and that they are going to launch the project. The shellfish is worth $28 million in the Comox valley alone.

  16. V The water bodies that will be affected are Fanny bay, Buckley bay and Baynes sound. These water bodies carry sea food, and the sea food business is worth a lot of money.

  17. VI I would only support the raven mine company if they didn’t make it to big and didn’t ruin the water because that is a crucial part of Vancouver island’s income.
