  1. Estonian Grid Andi Hektor, Lauri Anton NGN Workshop in Vilnius March 17, 2005

  2. First year of the Estonian Grid • Jan '04: first components of the EG: Estonian Grid CA, country level GIIS and first test clusters • Jan '04: NorduGrid technical meeting in Tallinn • Mar '04: some first multiprocessor clusters join the EG • Apr '04: CP/CPS draft for the EGCA • May '04: first scientific software ported to the EG • May '04: Grid laboratory at the Tartu University • Jun '04: establishment of the technical coordination group of the EG • Jun-Jul '04: first massive scientific calculations at the EG • Sept '04:EGCA was accredited by EUGridPMA • Okt '04: EG technical support group publishes the first article about the first scientific results produced with the EG • Oct 5-7 ’04:The first Baltic Grid meeting

  3. Second year of the Estonian Grid • Jan '05:NGN meeting in Tallinn • Jan '05:Estonian Grid Board was formed • Feb '05: Baltic Grid CA and network of RAs was established • Mar '05: Baltic Grid proposal was prepared for FP6 I3

  4. EG monitor

  5. The technical solution of EG • Choice of middleware – ARC (aka NorduGrid) • At the moment 122 CPUs, both AMD and P4 with varying speeds. Clusters use PBS as local scheduling agent. • GÉANT connection now 622Mbit/s, connection between Tallinn and Tartu 1Gbit/s • CA has completed the first year of operations, has started certificate rekeying cycle • CA has given out 52 user certificates (3 revoked), 30 host/ldap certificates (15 clusters) • Our CA is apporved by NorduGrid and EGEE and our country level GIIS registers to NorduGrids top level GIISes • In addition to standard OpenSSL generated certificates there have been successful tests to use the national ID card

  6. Technical support for the EG users • Technical support and coordination group, 6 persons at the different institutions • Support list: grid-tech@lists.eenet.ee • Web: http://grid.eenet.ee

  7. Know-how centres • Estonian CERN CMS group at NICPB Porting CMS software to NorduGrid CERN Tier 2 plans http://www.nicpb.ee/centre • UT Lab of Grid technology DOUG software Commercial applications • UT Theoretical chemistryUNICORE, OpenMolGridhttp://www.openmolgrid.org • Plans: bioinformatics, medicalapplications, nuclear safety

  8. Some applications: Geant4 • Mobile gamma spectrometry • Need for modelling: Monte Carlo (Geant4) • Computational power: NorduGridi, EG • Collaboration: NICPB and UT in Estonia; STUK, HIP and MATINE in Finland

  9. Political structure and cost of the EG • The political structure of the EG - the steering committee of the EG is establishing - EENet, NICPB, TUT, UT • The cost of the EG- 0 euros in the first year - based volunteers in this year - 4-6 persons are involved, not full-time - the budget of the this year is open

  10. Support project for the commercial applications Coordinator: The Lab of Grid Technology at the UT Companies and plans: • AS EGeen: analyse of gene information • OÜ Nukufilm:animations and rendering • OÜ Vendomar:testing of the applications • AS Sertifitseerimiskeskus: ID-card and its applications • AS Silmet:nuclear and radiation safety • AS Tallinna Diagnostikakeskus:medical applications • Other: Centre of Radiation Safety, the Ministry of Defence

  11. International collaborations • Nordic Grid Neighbourhood • NorduGrid • Baltic Grid

  12. Ongoing Grid lectures and seminars • For one year there have been Grid seminars at Tartu University and now a new series of seminars is starting in Tallinn University of Technology • Tartu University has course on Grid technology in this spring with 50 students.

  13. Future plans of EG • Incorporate new software and help different scientific groups to come to Grid • Expand the Grid by new resources and new services (a few more clusters about to join, new storage 2TB in filesystem creation phase) • Keep an eye on LCG developments • Try to build a strong connection with our northern and southern partners in Grid businesses
