Historical Fiction:. A story that is set in the past. The setting is usually real and drawn from history and often contains actual historical people, but the main characters tend to be fictional. You are going to create a historical fiction story that reflects this definition.

  1. Historical Fiction: A story that is set in the past. The setting is usually real and drawn from history and often contains actual historical people, but the main characters tend to be fictional. You are going to create a historical fiction story that reflects this definition.

  2. Step One: Brainstorm • Take 5 minutes and jot down a list of historical events that you are familiar with and would already have some previous knowledge about. • EVENTS MUST BE 1996 OR EARLIER! • After the 5 minutes, pair and share your list with someone around you.

  3. Step Two: Talk it out • We will read a few short excerpts from historical fiction stories. • Write a list on the board of 3-5 historical topics and talk and brainstorm possible story ideas and outlines.

  4. Step Three: Remember the Plan • Record example in your notebook: • S: Setting • C: Characters • P: Problem • W: Why is it a problem • FS1: Failed Solution 1 • FS2: Failed Solution 2 • R: Resolution • HF: Historical Facts

  5. Historical Fiction Details • Rough Draft Writing Conferences will be done in class on Thursday and Friday, May 17th & May 18th. If necessary, they will continue to Monday, May 21st. • Rough Drafts must be HAND-WRITTEN. Wednesday, May 16th will be an in-class rough draft writing day. • Final Drafts will be due Wednesday, May 30that the start of class.

Historical Fiction Details cont. • Before the start of the narrative story, you will have a 1 paragraph summary of the historical event that serves as the setting of your story. • In your story there must be at least two references to actual historical events or people. These will be underlined / highlighted in your rough draft and final copy.

  7. Historical Fiction Details cont. • Your main character will be a fictional character. • Your story may be told in first or third person. Be sure that your story reflects D.A.N.T. (Dialogue, Action, Narrative, Thoughts) • Final drafts must be typed, double-spaced, 12 pt. font, Times font. • Stories must be at least 2 FULL PAGES LONG. Probably will go onto a 3rd page.
