  5. Present new Information The food and drink industry is the largest manufacturing sector in the country. Over 400,000 people are employed in this industry. Food & drink contributes £28.8bn to the economy. In the UK, about ten people die every year from food-induced anaphylaxis. It is therefore essential that the food and drink industry test their foods to reduce chances of allergies.

  6. Construct Meaning Food test: Sugar with Benedict’s solution Protein with Buiret solution Starch with iodine

  7. Present new Information Add potassium hydroxide to egg white and then shake, add equal amount of copper sulphate to the solution and shake. The solution will turn purple if protein is present.

  8. Present new Information Add glucose to a test tube. Add an equal volume of benedicts solution. Shake and bring gently to the boil, shaking continuously to minimise spitting. The solution should turn blue to red.

  9. Present new Information Add bread to a test tube and then add 2 drops of iodine (orange-brown) solution. If starch is present it will turn blue-black.

  10. Apply to demonstrate • Complete the experiment above and then use the results table below to write a conclusion. L/O

  12. Review Discuss with the people any real life situations where you may use what you have learnt today. E.G. List the type of foods that will contain the above ingredients.
