  3. The Need for Energy All living things need continuous supply of energy. Almost all energy used by living organisms comes from sun. Energy from ‘SUN’ is captured and stored by green organisms in the bonds of “GLUCOSE’ : process known as Photosynthesis

  4. Glucose Molecular formula: C6H12O6 • Unit of Energy • Single unit of Carbohydrate family. • C6(H2O): contains Carbon. • : Hydrogen & Oxygen as Water • Main Fuel for all Living things- bacteria, virus, animals, plants. • Glucose --bond breaks--energy release as ATP( adenosine tri phosphate)

  5. Photosynthesis Occurs in organism which contains only “ Chlorophyll” Photosynthesis is the process by which light energy is changed to chemical potential energy and stored in the bonds of glucose molecules.

  6. The Role of Chlorophyll • Green leaf chlorophyll  contains pigments. • Pigments must absorb BLUE and REDcolour but not the GREEN. • There are at least 5 chlorophyll molecules.( almost similar in their structure) • Two major chlorophylls are_ 1. Chlorophyll a 2. Chlorophyll b

  7. The Role of Chlorophyll • Chlorophyll is found in Chloroplast • Works as a CATALYST in photosynthesis Reaction  speed up the process. • Other pigments _ • Carotenes  orange • Xanthophylls  yellow • They assist photosynthesis reaction by absorbing different colours and help Chlorophyll.

  13. The Colour Theory Why does a white substance appear white when we shine white light on it? Why does a black substance appear black when we shine white light on it? Why a green object appears green when we shine white light on it? Why a red object appears black when we shine blue light on it? Why does a green substance allows only green light to pass through it, or an orange substance allows only orange light to pass through it?
