  3. Massachusetts Bay Colony • John Winthrop’s “City Upon a Hill” • Joint Stock Company, controlled entirely in Massachusetts: Winthrop brought the charter with him • Theocracy: political rights extended to church members

  4. Rhode Island • aka Massachusetts “garbage can” • Founded by Roger Williams; pushed for separation of church and state; questioned the seizure of Native American land • Anne Hutchinson; offended authority; questioned church teachings; had the AUDACITY to be a woman!

  5. Connecticut • The Fundamental Orders (1639)- voting for all land owners • Settlement: land grants to proprietors; fee simple plan; development of Town Hall Meeting

  6. Misc… • King Phillip’s War (Metacom): June-Dec. 1675 • 5% of New England’s population was killed: 25% of Native American population • Salem Witch Trials: 20 people executed based on accusations of a couple of adolescent girls • Iroquois Confederation and the domination of the fur trade
