  1. A Cost-effective Fish Pond Monitoring and Warning System Using Thermal Probe Carpio et. al #1570443972 Presented by John Caleb Banares International Conference on Intelligent Systems, Modeling and Simulation (ISMS 2018)

  2. Introduction Related Works Proposed Approach Experimental Details Results and Analysis Conclusions Introduction • AQUATIC RESOURCES FISH KILL • OXYGEN DEPLETION MONITORING • Way back 2011, the country was besieged by a string of fish kill events that not only affected the “traditional” coastal finfish growing areas in the country (e.g., Pangasinan) but was also happening in freshwater lakes (i.e., Taal Lake) at a scale that worried people from all sectors. • In 2014, the Philippines ranked 8th among the top fish producing countries in the world with its total production of 4.7 million metric tons of fish, crustaceans, mollusks, and aquatic plants (including seaweeds). International Conference on Intelligent Systems, Modeling and Simulation (ISMS 2018) 1/14

  3. Introduction Related Works Proposed Approach Experimental Details Results and Analysis Conclusions Introduction • Fish kill Forum held at University of the Philippines – Diliman • A national fish kill quick response is needed. • An effective monitoring and surveillance system has to be established. • Accountability and compliance is key. • A two-stage licensing system for mariculture activities in order to provide checks and balances is important. • LGUs need to review and further strengthen existing sanctions and monitoring mechanisms. • Empowerment and education are essential. • Fishers and stakeholders must be aware of and apply only the proper technologies and practices in mariculture. • A comprehensive national framework on sustainable aquaculture must be put in place. • Regular forums on mariculture must be conducted for the benefit of all stakeholders. International Conference on Intelligent Systems, Modeling and Simulation (ISMS 2018) 2/14

  4. Introduction Related Works Proposed Approach Experimental Details Results and Analysis Conclusions Related Works “Utilization of Sensors and SMS Technology to Remotely Maintain the Level of Dissolved Oxygen, Salinity and Temperature of Fishponds” by Munoz, R.C. et al., 2015 It aimed to develop an automated monitoring system with controlling facility using sensors and a database management system to remotely monitor the dissolved oxygen (DO), salinity and temperature of water in fish culture enclosures, particularly in ponds, thus preventing fish kills. ______________________________________________________________ OXYGENOMETER THERMAL PROBE AERATION SYSTEM International Conference on Intelligent Systems, Modeling and Simulation (ISMS 2018) 3/14

  5. Introduction Related Works Proposed Approach Experimental Details Results and Analysis Conclusions Proposed Approach International Conference on Intelligent Systems, Modeling and Simulation (ISMS 2018) 4/14

  6. Introduction Related Works Proposed Approach Experimental Details Results and Analysis Conclusions Experimental Details Project Development: • Determination of a linear equation relating dissolved oxygen level and water temperature • Development of Warning System via SMS and audio device • Development of temporary preventive system (Aeration system) International Conference on Intelligent Systems, Modeling and Simulation (ISMS 2018) 5/14

  7. Introduction Related Works Proposed Approach Experimental Details Results and Analysis Conclusions Experimental Details OPTIMIZING THE LINEAR ASSOCIATION OF WATER TEMPERATURE AND DISSOLVED OXYGEN LEVEL International Conference on Intelligent Systems, Modeling and Simulation (ISMS 2018) 7/14

  8. Introduction Related Works Proposed Approach Experimental Details Results and Analysis Conclusions Experimental Details • WARNING NOTIFICATION SYSTEM APPROCHING AND AT THRESHOLD LEVEL International Conference on Intelligent Systems, Modeling and Simulation (ISMS 2018) 8/14

  9. Introduction Related Works Proposed Approach Experimental Details Results and Analysis Conclusions Experimental Details • TEMPORARY PREVENTIVE SYSTEM International Conference on Intelligent Systems, Modeling and Simulation (ISMS 2018) 9/14

  10. Introduction Related Works Proposed Approach Experimental Details Results and Analysis Conclusions Results and Analysis • CORRELATION BETWEEN TEMPERATURE AND DISSOLVED OXYGEN LEVEL International Conference on Intelligent Systems, Modeling and Simulation (ISMS 2018) 10/14

  11. Introduction Related Works Proposed Approach Experimental Details Results and Analysis Conclusions Results and Analysis SYSTEM RESPONSE WHEN EXCEEDED THRESHOLD In this study, the threshold was set to 7 mg / L as according the standard set by Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST – PCAARD). International Conference on Intelligent Systems, Modeling and Simulation (ISMS 2018) 11/14

  12. Introduction Related Works Proposed Approach Experimental Details Results and Analysis Conclusions Results and Analysis DISSOLVED OXYGEN BEFORE AND AFTER AERATION It is evident in the table below that the aeration system contributes to the increase of dissolved oxygen level in the fish pond which is a great help in lessening the fatality among the aquatic resources in the said fish pond. International Conference on Intelligent Systems, Modeling and Simulation (ISMS 2018) 12/14

  13. Introduction Related Works Proposed Approach Experimental Details Results and Analysis Conclusions Conclusions • The use of temperature to predict dissolved oxygen level is effective • Equations of the relation between dissolved oxygen and temperature varies with respect to the target environment • System is highly needed at the periods when temperature is high, because of the indirect relationship of the two parameters • Use of audio alarm plus the real time update visual monitor are efficient alternative during the failure of SMS. • Aeration system must continue functioning until it is disabled manually 13/14 International Conference on Intelligent Systems, Modeling and Simulation (ISMS 2018)
