  2. William Randolph Hearst • Born in San Francisco in 1863, 29th of April • Became “Proprietor” of the San Francisco Examiner at age 23 Studied at Harvard • Inspired by Joseph Pulitzer • Son of George Hearst, a newspaper proprietor • Died on August 14, 1951

Early career • Took over the San Francisco Examiner in 1887 • Acquired the New York Morning Journal in 1895 • Launched Evening Journal in 1896 • Gained a reputation of employing the best journalists available: Ambrose Bierce, Stephan Crane, Mark Twain, Richard Harding Davis, and Jack London • At his peak, owned: 28 major newspapers, 18 magazines, and Several radio stations and movie companies

  4. What he was remembered for • Turned the newspaper into a combination of reformist investigative reporting and lurid sensationalism • Introduced banner headlines and lavish illustrations • Famous yellow journalist

Matt Lauer • Born on December 30, 1957 in NYC • In 1974, he left NY to attend Ohio University • He quit in 1979, just 4 credits shy of graduating • He wanted to pursue journalism internship at WOWK-TV in West Virginia • By 1980, he was an On-Air Reporter • In the 1980s, Matt worked many reporting gigs along the east coast • He worked for several news magazines, which eventually led him back to the Big Apple • Married Annette Roque and has three kids

Matt Lauer’s Career • Matt has hosted several short-lived shows, such as: • (1986) Fame, Fortune, and Romance with Robin Leach • (1989) Esquire Show on Lifetime • The late-night talk-show Day’s End • He became co-host for the live talk-show 9 Broadway Plaza in 1989 • This established him as one of the most audience friendly news-anchors of NYC • In 1992, NBC signed Matt to Co-host 2 shows, Today and Live at Five • Traveled all over the world doing interview as an anchorman
