New Product InformationPRODUCT GUIDE for Product Team Technical Support Department Feb. 21, 2006 Ver1.0
Characteristics of the Ink • General Description: • Exclusive use for AJ-1000 • Focused on large-size banners of PVC and FF • Features: • High viscosity, which does not result grainy after output, enables higher density printing compared to the other RDG inks. • Suitable for FF use • Since printing in large dot of 35pl is available, high-density printing is realized despite its low resolution. • High productivity, Advantaged outdoor resistance • Improved drying time realized by enhanced drying system Windable while in high-speed printing of max. speed 45m²/hHigh productivity • Safety: • EcoXtreme is environmental conscious as with the former RDG solvent-based ink ECO-SOL INK / ECO-SOLMAX>EcoXtreme Ink>Hard Solvent • Contains no cyclohexanone • Organic solvent poisoning prevention rule non-correspondence (Japan) • Flash point:83ºC (ECO-SOL INK/MAX:71ºC) • However, odor is stronger compared to ECO-SOL INK and ECO-SOL MAX.
Characteristics of the Ink • Regulatory Considerations:
Outdoor Durability (Comparison with other RDG inks) • Test Method • Acceleration weather test (1,500 hours, counted as 3 years) • Equipment : [Canon Weather Meter] • Media : Avery MPI2001 (PVC) • Test Result • From the test result, we made a graph of each CMYK ink per 10% density, based on the color difference Delta E 10, and found the followings. • Better durability compared to ECO-SOL MAX • Acceleration test result did not exceed DeltaE 10. The value of DeltaE does not go up even though under low density of 50-10%.
Outdoor Durability : Banner 1 • Durability comparison among banner media • Although not the same media, results were similar to PVC media in comparing various banners.
Outdoor Durability : Banner 2 • Durability comparison among banner media • Although not the same media, results were similar to PVC media in comparing various banners.
Outdoor Durability : Consideration for Banner • Discoloration of Banner Media • During the weatherability-accelerating test on banner media, discoloration of PVC material as shown on the picture below was found. Therefore, we confirmed changes of whiteness degree. Outdoor Durability : Consideration for Banner • Conclusion • Banner media, especially uncoated ones, has a characteristic of large discoloration on its material. And it significantly affects the result of outdoor durability. • As downgrading the media coating, media can be produced in lower cost. In other words, the lower the price of uncoated media, the higher the tendency of discoloration. • Actually, media, so-called uncoated, also have some sort of finish on it.

However, for PVC, ECO-SOL MAX is higher. Magenta of EcoXtreme Ink has lower scratch resistance than other colors. Print Conditions EcoXtreme Ink: AJ-1000 4-pass (360x720dpi) ECO-SOL INK/MAX: PROⅡ 16-pass (720x1440dpi) Test Method Under the conditions, test print on each media with EcoXtreme Ink, ECO-SOL MAX and ECO-SOL INK, and compare the results visually. Scratch Resistance : PVC EcoXtreme Ink ECO-SOL INK ECO-SOL MAX As for scratch resistance on PVC, ECO-SOL MAX is the best.
Test Conditions Equipment :Color Fastness Rubbing Tester (Gakushin Type) Rubbing cloth : Cotton Alcohol density : 100% Weight : 200g, 5 repeated rubbings Media : Mactac JT5829R Test Method Testing under the conditions, compare the results of EcoXtreme, ECO-SOL MAX and ECO-SOL INK visually. Test Result EcoXtreme Ink shows better alcohol resistance compared to the other RDG inks. Alcohol Resistance EcoXtreme Ink ECO-SOL MAX ECO-SOL INK

Test Result Banner has less alcohol resistance compared to PVC. Alcohol Resistance : Banner and PVC PVC:Mactac JT5829R Banner:HANWHA PG25 [Cotton cloth used for rubbing]
The cotton cloth after rubbing test Transfer of yellow ink onto the cloth Upper:Alcohol density 99%Lower:Alcohol density 75% Alcohol Resistance : Banner • Alcohol Resistance on various banners • When alcohol density is 99%, all 4 colors of CMYK are transferred onto the cotton cloth. • Almost no transferring is recognized when alcohol density is lowered to 75%, however there were still some media that the yellow ink is slightly transferred onto the cotton cloth. • When using alcohol to clean banners, it needs to be thinned to the density of 75% or less.
Odor • Strong Odor • It is necessary to consider indoor ventilation. If you stay in the airtight room for a long time while printing, it may cause eye or throat irritation. • It is that media drying ability of AJ-1000 is high and solvent volatilization is remarkably promoted. Also it is by the volatilized solvent, normally staying lower, blown away by the blower. • Odor from print • When the prints of 20m² banner and 7m² PVC, been rolled into cylinders for 24 hours, were spread out in a room, the solvent odor filled the room. • Recommended to have a fan in the room • The volatilizing solvent tends to stay downward because it is heavier than air. Preferably, a fan should be installed at lower position.
Color Gamut • Gamut is equal to ECO-SOL MAX (Color reproduction range) Banner : SAKURAI LLBAU13713 PVC : Mactac JT5829R
Summary • EcoXtreme is environmental conscious featuring high density, bright coloration, high outdoor durability, high productivity and alcohol resistance, in generally suitable for banners of outdoor use. • Scratch Resistance • Scratch resistance on banner has been improved from ECO-SOL MAX. • Drying Time • Possible to take-up media while in high-speed mode of 45m²/h. • Density • High density print which is good for FF is available. • Color Gamut • Almost equal to ECO-SOL MAX (Color reproduction range) • Outdoor Durability • Equal or better than ECO-SOL MAX • Odor • Odor is much stronger than ECO-SOL MAX. • Safety • Cyclohexanone-free • Organic solvent poisoning prevention rule non-correspondence (Japan) • Low inflammability due to the high flash point of 83ºC • Alcohol Resistance • Improved from ECO-SOL MAX.
Summary : Comparison with competitors • SII:EG-OutdoorInk • Performance is nearly the same. However, AJ has larger dots of 35pl compared to 100S’s 14pl, therefore high-density printing is realized despite its low resolution. • Mutoh:LamiLess Ink • Scratch resistance is high, however safety is low instead. Also, the rendering is narrow regarding gamut and it is necessary to increase ink amount in order to cover the low ink density. • Mimaki:SS2 Ink • Lower quality in density, outdoor durability and safety • pl:Pico Liter • It is the size of dot output from a printer head and is a spec indicating the definition of the printer. Unit of a trillionth liter • Less than 2pl with the latest compact printers(4-6pl, several years ago) • LamiLess ECO is output in 10pl dots. (From Mutoh’s HP)
