  2. What patterns can you see here? Which countries have the most tourists? Which countries have the least tourists? How could you categorise them?

  3. Why do Certain Places Attract More Tourists? Learning Objectives: To share ideas To predict where the most popular destinations will be and why To classify and explain different tourist destinations (with examples)

  4. Where do you think the most popular tourist destinations are in the world? Have a guess before we see the answers. Here are the most popular according to the UNWTO (2008)...

  5. As a class, let’s make a tally chart telling us where you went on your last holiday. Only use country names for now; we can explain our choices more fully later. How do your tally charts compare with ... ... The Top 5 Destinations from the UK for Visits Abroad in 2008 (Source :UNWTO) Does anything surprise you here? What are main differences/similarities between this data and your own tally charts? Why do you think people visited each country? Where might they visit within each country? Come up with some ideas for each country in this table.

  6. On your A3 sheet... There are 6 main types of tourist destination in the world. Have a look at the pictures on the sheets and try to categorise the pictures into the 6 different types of destination and give each type of destination a title. Do your titles match these?: - Seaside Resorts - Countryside/National Park - Cities/Towns - Business Travel Destinations - Purpose Built Destinations - Cultural/Historical Places Now, on your A3 sheet, label a particular resort on the map for each type of destination, giving the name of the country and place. For example, for seaside resort, you could point to Benidorm in Spain.

  7. Do it like this (but complete it!)... Countryside Cities Business Purpose Built Historical/Cultural Seaside Resorts Benidorm, Spain

  8. PLENARY: Remember this table... What reasons did you give for visiting each country? Most tourists go on holiday to visit a different environment to what they’re used to. The 3 main types of environment are: Cities Mountains Coasts Look back at your picture cards and try to categorise them again into these 3 groups. On the back of your A3 sheet, give as many reasons as you can as to why these environments are popular, with examples that you can think of.
