  1. UNDERSTANDINGSTOMACH SENSITIVITY

  2. What Are the Symptoms of Stomach Sensitivity? We all have experienced stomach sensitivity at one time or another. However, when your symptoms are chronic, this may indicate a more serious condition. Some mild to moderate symptoms include: • Acid reflux • Indigestion • Heartburn • Diarrhea • Constipation • Nausea Often, relief from these symptoms can be achieved through dietary, lifestyle, or activity changes. If symptoms persist, it may be something more serious and you should consult your provider.

  3. When to See a Provider Some severe symptoms that warrant a referral to a gastroenterologist include: • Fever with no explicable cause • Abdominal pain that interferes with your daily life for at least three days per month • Pus or blood in the stool • Diarrhea that interferes with your sleep A gastroenterologist will evaluate your symptoms and diagnose the problem or order testing.

  4. Is It Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)? IBS is a condition characterized by the malfunction of the stomach and intestines. This can manifest itself in several ways, including chronic bowel pain, diarrhea or constipation, and gas. The pain and discomfort associated with IBS can be so severe that it interferes with your ability to live your everyday life. The only way to know for certain whether or not you have IBS is to schedule a visit with your gastroenterologist to obtain a diagnosis.

  5. What to Expect During Your Gastroenterology Visit You can expect your gastroenterologist to ask you several questions during your initial visit. They will want to know about: • Yours and your family’s medical history • Your lifestyle • Your activity level • Your eating habits • Any medications you may be taking Your gastroenterologist will likely conduct a physical examination of your abdominal area, and may recommend a colonoscopy or ultrasound to further investigate possible reasons for your stomach sensitivity. Your gastroenterologist will come up with a treatment plan based on your symptoms and any findings to help manage your condition.

  6. Treatment Options If you have mild to moderate symptoms, your provider may recommend some things to do at home. For example, you can ensure proper hydration, reduce stress and caffeine intake, and eliminate the foods you suspect are the cause of your stomach irritation. Severe symptoms may require over-the-counter medications and probiotics. Mental health therapy such as biofeedback may be prescribed if your symptoms do not respond to medication.
