1. 14.2 Warm Up1. Ms. Palomaa needs to pick a queen and king for her 1st hour class. She has 10 girls and 12 boys in her class. How many different ways can she pick a queen and king?2. Moveo Dance Company is preparing for their dance performance. They are trying to make as many different costumes from the pieces that they have purchased. They have a red skirt, blue shorts, black pants, a gray top, a white top, and a black t-shirt. How many different costumes can they make?

2. 14.2 Warm UpAnswers1. Ms. Palomaa is rearranging her seating chart for 1st hour. She has 10 girls and 12 boys in her class. How many different ways can she arrange her seating chart?10 * 12 = 120 different ways2. Moveo Dance Company is preparing for their dance performance. They are trying to make as many different costumes from the pieces that they have purchased. They have a red skirt, blue shorts, black pants, a gray top, a white top, and a black t-shirt. How many different costumes can they make?3 * 3 = 9 different costumes

3. Lesson 14.2ProbabilitySample Space

4. Sample Space Probability is the chance that something will happen. The result of each experiment is call an EventorOutcome. The set of all possible outcomes is the Sample Space. Because each probability is a fraction of the sample space, the sum of the probabilities of all the possible outcomes equals one.

5. Probability- Sample Space Example: The probability of picking a red marble from a jar that contains 4 red marbles and 6 blue marbles There are 10 possible outcomes. You will either draw one of the 4 red marbles or one of the 6 blue marbles. So your sample space will be ___? In this example, the probability of picking a red marble would be: ______ or ________. 10 2/5 4/10 Given this example, the probability of picking a red marble plus the probability of picking a blue marble will equal 1 (or 100 percent).

6. Sample Space If sample space means the set of all possible outcomes, then what is the sample space for the situation below? You have two quarters and you are flipping to see the outcome. What is the sample space? The sample space could be _________________What is the size of the sample space? ___ { HH, HT, TH, TT } 4

7. (Heads,1) 1 1 (Heads,2) 2 2 (Heads,3) 3 3 (Heads,4) 4 4 (Heads,5) 5 5 6 6 (Heads,6) (Tails,1) (Tails,2) (Tails,3) (Tails,4) (Tails,5) (Tails,6) Example: Find the sample space if a coin is tossed then a dice is rolled. What is the size of the sample space? How many total outcomes are there? Heads 12 Tails 12

8. 1 2 3 4 H H H H T T T T Example: Make a tree to find the sample space, then answer the questions. A card is picked from 1-4 and then a coin is flipped. What is the size of the sample space ____? (1,H) (1,T) (2,H), (2,T) (3,H), (3,T), (4,H),(4,T) 8

9. Summary: In your own words, define sample space. How confident do you feel in your ability to find sample space?
