  1. HEAVEN AND HELL CONTINUED

  2. Last week we learned that: • The pearly gates and streets of gold are in New Jerusalem, not heaven. • Heaven is a temporary place for us until the second coming • Paul has little to say about heaven or hell • Resurrection does not happen until the second coming

  3. Revelation is the only book with an extended discussion about Satan. Do you believe that Satan is a real entity? The New Testament does not tell us that Satan has been confined to some underworld place like hell. The ancient idea of hell being within or underneath the earth is not actually grounded in the Bible.

  4. In Revelation, we see a threefold fall of Satan • From heaven to earth • From earth to the pit • From the pit to the lake of fire • From this lake of fire and Jesus’ depiction of Gehenna that we get the notion that Satan is associated with hell. • For John, Satan is not in hell or the lake of fire, that comes later. How do you feel about Satan not being in hell?

  5. So if Satan is not in hell where is he? Read John 12:31 Jesus often refers to Satan as the ruler of the world Christians are warned that we are not immune to the attacks of Satan. Read Ephesians 6:10-17

  6. Read 1 Peter 5:8-10 What do these verses say to you? Christians can be attacked by Satan too. Most attacks come through temptations.

  7. Read Ephesians 6:10-17 Notice that none of the armor protects the back. In other words, do not run away from Satan, but meet him face to face.

  8. How do you think Satan attacks Christians? How do you feel about demonic possession? The New Testament tells us that we who have the Holy Spirit cannot be possessed by the devil. The devil may persecute us, but cannot dwell within us. There is no discussion about demonic possession once we get past the Gospels.

  9. Modern attempts to find demons as the source of illnesses in the Christian life have no basis in scripture. Read Genesis 6:1-4 What do you think of these fallen angels, these giants called Nephilim?

  10. The greatest trick of Satan is to create a smokescreen which leads believers to think that Satan does not exist or if he does, he has little or no power. If Satan does exist, then he is battling the church today. Satan would not be a confined or spent force.

  11. How do you think the world views Christians today? Are we known more for what we believe or what we oppose? In a recent survey, 38% of those surveyed look at Christians unfavorably. We are better known for what we oppose than what we believe.

  12. When read carefully, the major message from the book of Revelation is that though Christians are being persecuted and in some cases executed, God is still in control of this world; and in the end justice and redemption will be brought upon this earth. Does it help you to know that God is till in control when you are going though bad times, and that good and love will prevail in the end?
