  2. Agenda

  3. Rules of the house • You are welcome to take pictures in here… • But absolutely no photos in the towing tank area, please!

  4. Introducing ADAM4EVE • Adaptive and smart materials and structures for more efficient vessels. • funded by the European Union within the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) – contract number: SCP2-GA-2012-314206 • Duration: Jan 2013 – Dec 2015

  5. ADAM4EVE – Why Adaptive? • Challenges addressed: • Varying operation and environment. • Ships optimized for one specific condition or a limited range • Constant properties of structures and materials. • Aim: • improve ship performance and safety by making materials and structures modifiable during operation; • modifications can be based passively (smart materials) or actively (sensors and actuators); • provide inexpensive solutions; • Constraints • Complexity of ship – Various functionalities • Extreme loads at sea – Ability to withstand the harsh operation • Safety requirements – Rules complied for the safety of passengers/cargos • One-of-a-kind product – Cost efficiency Design speed + design draught Varying sunlight Varying operations Varying vibration

  6. ADAM4EVE – Work approach • Material and Component Development • Uptake of solutions available for other industries • Development of modules, interfaces etc. for the marine sector • Assessment of Safety and Sustainability • Identification of risks and risk control options • Tests of technical properties (thermal, mechanical, fire etc.) • Life cycle cost and environmental assessment • Validation and Development of Realistic Applications • Design studies of adaptive solutions • Identify problems and research needs • Manufacturing of application prototypes

  7. ADAM4EVE – Materials/Applications • Smart materials • Optic smart coatings and glass • Magnetic smart damping material • Smart latent heat storage material • Reinforced rubber etc. • Adaptive applications • 16 solutions for realistic application scenarios • Design studies, prototypes, tests • Bulbous bow • Rudder-propeller • Electro- and infrared smart windows, adaptive dampers etc.  Documented by means of dissemination material and events

  8. Introducing MESA • Approach and methodology: • Maritime Europe Strategy Action – FOSTER Waterborne • Sep. 2013 – Aug. 2016 • Goal: Increase effectiveness of funding programs by • targeting strategic goals • collecting technology gaps • improving cooperation between funding programs and projects • using a wider range of project results • Scope: Funding programs in Europe (EU, member states, regional), andprivateinvestments for RDI in the maritimeindustry Foresight – Analysis of ‚external‘ drivers SoA – State oftheart (research & industry) • Engergy efficiency • Safety • Material & Production • E-Maritime • Market • Policy • Societal needs • Regulations MESA Integration: Describe necessary future steps • Technical development • EU research priorities

  9. Goals of the workshop • Show innovative application opportunities • Enable dialogue between Research, industry and classification • Compare State-of-the-art vs. Challenges + Obstaclesw/rto future developments • Discuss Options for overcoming potential problems • Receive your feedback (via direct discussion or by filling the feedback forms)
